Easynet pipes bandwidth to British Waterways Wednesday 7 November 2001 PDF Print Major managed bandwidth services contract for Easynet's new fibre optic network 7 November 2001 - Easynet, the leading broadband communications provider, has today announced a significant long-term contract with British Waterways for the provision of a comprehensive range of telecommunications solutions. Connecting nearly 20 British Waterways sites, Easynet will be providing STM-1 (155Mbit/s) and STM-4 (622Mbit/s) managed bandwidth services across the UK. This announcement marks one of the first major contract wins using Easynet's new fibre optic network since the network was switched on less than one month ago. British Waterways, which runs over 2,000 miles of canal and river network, is using the Easynet Telecommunications solution to connect a number of offices throughout the UK, facilitating full IP access on all sites as well as video and audio conferencing, video streaming and fast data transfer. Additionally, in the event of any breach or network incident, the core Easynet network provides alternative data paths, ensuring continuation of service. This project is the result of a close working relationship between British Waterways and Easynet Group plc. Of Easynet's 3,500km high-capacity fibre optic network, 660km is laid alongside British Waterways' canal network, reducing the environmental impact of the build programme and providing the ability to lay high capacity fibre quickly through densely populated areas. In addition British Waterways has a 3.38% voting interest in Easynet Group plc. David Fletcher, Chief Executive of British Waterways, commented: "Working with Easynet on this project is an excellent example of how British Waterways uses partnership with the public and private sectors to generate income for reinvestment. "200 years ago inland waterways were the backbone of the first industrial revolution. This telecommunications network marks, for us, a significant step forward into a new industrial revolution, enabling us to maintain a valuable national resource for future generations to enjoy." Neil Rafferty, CEO of the Easynet Group continues, "For Easynet, this is an important deal, as we have recently switched on our entire UK network. With a 3,500km national footprint, British Waterways is one of the first organisations to benefit from the high capacity and superior coverage offered by the network." About British Waterways British Waterways is the public corporation that cares for a 2000-mile network of canals and navigable rivers across the country, working with a broad range of public, private and voluntary sector partners to improve the social, economic and environmental benefits of the inland waterways.
