Information Builders provide data collation and analysis tools for
Process Engineers at international light gauge steel production plant
Information Builders, a leader in Web Business Intelligence, working with Corus Packaging Plus, a supplier of light gauge steel for packaging and non-packaging applications, have implemented a Business Intelligence system at the latter’s Llanelli plant. The new system collates and analyses data from numerous legacy sources, and generates reports, which are used to improve the production process and speed up new product development.
The Corus Packaging Plus operation at the Trostre Works in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, produces a wide variety of mainly steel-based products for use in packaging applications ranging from soft drink cans and holographic materials to reflectors for fluorescent lighting. The manufacturing process is complex and a very wide range of products is produced with specific requirements from many of the customers. Accurate analysis of process data was sought by Corus in order to improve quality and drive innovation.
Information Builders upgraded current FOCUS systems already in place through Corus’ UK predecessor British Steel, to FOCUS 6. EDA Copy Manager was implemented at the site to transfer data from the mainframe into Oracle data warehouses on an NT server, and FOCUS 6 is used to extract Process Control Data, available to users via their FOCUS Desktop systems. WebFOCUS browser-based systems have also started to be introduced to allow wider access and use.
The return on investment from the new system has been significant. Commercial staff can now obtain an accurate picture of the status of a particular order or get a summary of a customer's account. The data is also accessed by the finance function who are benefiting, since the system can provide much more accurate information on the true cost of a process.
Combining data from many data sources is leading to swifter product development. “With the FOCUS system we are able to understand processes better - we are getting better control of the levers in the manufacturing process,” said John Albiston, Project Manager for Business Intelligence at Corus Packaging Plus.
“We have a much more scientific approach to new product development – the system allows us not just to number crunch but to really validate new ideas.”
Within three months of implementing the first system at Corus’ Trostre Works, John Albiston and his colleague Anthony Batts, Business Analyst in Corus Strip Products UK were able to demonstrate the system to an internal Business Leadership Forum in Corus. The presentation has led to the expansion of the system over three further Corus sites operated by the Packaging Plus business.
