HOME INTERNET USE CONTINUES TO GROW IN THE UK - NETVALUE Thursday 8 November 2001 PDF Print Quarter of the population - 15 million Brits - now have home Internet access Nearly 900,000 connected since August People now spend 7.3 hours per month online Despite concerns of an Internet slow-down, the latest results from NetValue, a global leader in Internet intelligence, show a 53 per cent increase in new home Internet users during the past 12 months (September 2000 to September 2001). According to NetValue, the number of home Internet users reached 15 million in September 2001, up from 14.2 million in August - a month-on-month increase of just under 900,000 unique users. These figures are based on NetValue’s monthly establishment survey, carried out by Taylor Nelson Sofres. Since September 2000, the UK home Internet universe has grown by 53 per cent. In addition, this survey revealed that people are spending more time on the web, with the average Brit spending 7.3 hours online per month over 9.4 days. This is an increase from last year where the UK online population was spending 6.1 hours online per month. The number of domains visited per Internet user has decreased, down from an average of 58 to 44 but time spent on each domain has actually increased, as has the number of pages displayed per domain. This is evidence that Internet users are becoming loyal to a select number of sites. The percentage of young and old people online is growing: 24 and under users have increased by 18 per cent in the last year, whilst silver surfers, aged 50 and over, have grown by 16 per cent. The percentage of users aged between 25 and 49, however, has decreased by 15 per cent.
