Travel InfoSystems Launches New Version of CityPlanner

Travel InfoSystems, the travel planning software solutions specialists launched the new version of CityPlanner, its ground breaking multi-modal door-to-door journey planner, at the Passenger Transport Solutions 2001 in London on 30 October 2001. It was the first time CityPlanner has been shown to the general public.

CityPlanner allows travellers to check the availability of services and journey times for bus, rail, tram and tube and suggests alternative ways to travel from door-to-door using all the available services. Travellers simply enter a street name or landmark as the start point and final destination for any journey. CityPlanner automatically calculates the nearest tube or bus stop, walking times, a full itinerary of the journey with any necessary changes, travelling times and route numbers. It then provides comparative itineraries for all available public transport networks using alternative routes, allowing people to choose the best method of transport for their particular journey. It even allows travellers to exclude certain modes of transport.

The software can be adapted for the transport networks in any city or region. Travel InfoSystems has created a demo site – - based around the Greater London transport networks to show exactly what CityPlanner is capable of. For the London area, for example, transport modes include Bus, Docklands Light Railway, Tube, Tram and Rail, with the software producing an accurate route and times for the journey using the best combination of these modes.

However the site shows only a basic model of CityPlanner and contains the essential multi-modal journey planner, and route and street maps. Enhanced maps and directions for pedestrians and cyclists, guides and illustrations showing how to get to and from stops and stations, as well as contact details for the nearest and most appropriate taxi firm and places of interest, can all be added to the journey planning solution.

Terry Hiles, Managing Director, Travel InfoSystems, explains, “Our research on local and transport authorities shows that they are in desperate need of software developers that fully understand the challenges of delivering integrated passenger transport information using the latest technologies available, such as the Web and WAP, to satisfy government targets. More importantly, the delivery of accurate and up-to-date information with inherent local knowledge is considered to be essential. CityPlanner has specifically been designed to meet this demand.”

The results of an independent survey - “Embracing the PTI Initiative” - were recently published by Travel InfoSystems. The survey was commissioned to discover to what extent the Public Transport Executives (PTEs) and local authorities have embraced the Public Transport Information (PTI) Initiative. The government led initiative aims to provide up-to-date travel information for all users of public transport in the UK.

The survey drew attention to a number of issues, revealing the importance of both local information and local knowledge, as well as local authorities need for more funding to implement the PTI Initiative. It also discovered a worrying lack of national, up-to-date and real-time information. Most importantly for Travel InfoSystems it revealed a real need for the functionality offered by CityPlanner and confirmed its brave thinking in developing such a solution.
