FEATURE IDEA: ISP's must reassess their market if they are to stay profitable Thursday 8 November 2001 PDF Print We are all aware that Flat-rate Internet Access Call Origination (FRIACO) is widely regarded as the best interconnect model to ensure a viable business model for dial-up Internet services. However the only way to make money out of the model is to ensure you fully utilize the FRIACO pipe for 24 hours a day. The reason that FRIACO has not been the commercial success that it could have been is that FRIACO packages have been marketed primarily at residential users. These users are most likely to connect to the web after 6pm, leaving at least 12 hours during the day when the pipe is left unused - thus loosing money the service provider money. * It is now time for ISPs to reassess their market if they are to stay afloat - But how can they do this? In order to make the fullest use of the pipe they need to target a market that will use the pipe throughout the day. Namely SMEs! However, it is not enough to offer re branded residential packages to the SME market. SME's are a very specialised market and require a range of additional services to make Internet packages an inviting prospect for them. * ISPs must tap into the SME market if they are to succeed commercially If you would like further insight into this issue, I can put you in touch with Danny Sullivan Group Director of Affinity Internet, who would be happy to talk to you about how Affinity plan to tackle the disparate SME market. I will give you a call to ascertain your interest early next week.
