THE WORLD’S LARGEST SOCCER STADIUM ELIMINATES TICKET FRAUD THROUGH ENTERASYS WIRELESS SOLUTION Thursday 8 November 2001 PDF Print Brazilian-based Maracana Stadium Reports 20% Increase in Profits – Plans to Roll Out Solution to Additional 174 Stadiums throughout Brazil NEWBURY, ENGLAND & RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Enterasys Networks Inc. has announced that the Superintendency of Rio de Janeiro, the government body for the region, has implemented Enterasys’ RoamAboutTM wireless technology within the Maracana stadium, the world’s largest soccer arena. The solution provides secure wireless connectivity between 160 ticket offices located within the stadium and its central administration department, delivering real-time communication and monitoring of ticket sales. Through the mobilisation of its data, the stadium closely scrutinises all sales, eliminating the illegal supply of tickets and driving a 20% increase in profits. The Maracana stadium’s innovative system is enabling the government to fight ticket fraud. Soccer fans can now purchase five tickets only, with each sale registered through the buyer’s individual tax identification code. The data is collected at each ticket office and transmitted via Enterasys’ RoamAbout wireless solution to its wired network within its central administration department. With each Point-of-Sale (PoS) armed with access to real-time sales information, the ability for ticket scalpers to purchase numerous tickets is removed and protection for consumers is heightened. The solution was selected in association with Enterasys’ partner, Sao Paulo-based ITC and the project was completed in April 2001. Due to the success of Maracana Stadium, 174 additional stadiums throughout Brazil will be installed with the new automated ticket system based on Enterasys’ RoamAbout outdoor wireless solution. Installation for 32 of the largest stadiums is scheduled for 2002, supporting Brazil’s goal to become nominated as the host nation for the 2010 World Cup. “The great advantage of utilising Enterasys’ RoamAbout solution is that there is no requirement for cabling. We now have added security by controlling the number of supporters who are entering the stadium and, thanks to RoamAbout, we obtain attendee numbers in real time," said Sérgio Antonio Emilião, vice president of the Sports Superintendency of Rio de Janeiro (Suderj). The Enterasys wireless solution provides secure and uninterrupted access for each of the 160 ticket offices scattered throughout the stadium. The RoamAbout outdoor wireless infrastructure, a combination of Enterasys’ award-winning RoamAbout Access Points, 11Mbps Ethernet Radio Adapters and External Antennas, supplements the existing wired network and ensures the mobility of its sales data. Security is assured through inherent 40 and 128-bit encryption that supports the 802.11 Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) standards. “Wireless technology is allowing our customers to enhance business functions, either saving costs through enhanced connectivity, or increasing the ability to reach customers and leverage more revenues. The Maracana stadium in Brazil is seeing increased income of 20%, and through enhanced connectivity is protecting its revenue streams against fraud. Wireless in this case is showing its true flexibility and power,” said Mauricio Blanco, vice president for America Latina & Caribbean, Enterasys Networks. The Maracana Stadium system was recently highlighted by ComputerWorld, USA and received entry into its “World’s Top 25 Wireless Innovators” listing.
