Two Industry Leaders Target Improved Quality Of Experience For End-Users
Comverse, a unit of Comverse Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: CMVT), and the world's leading supplier of software and systems enabling network-based multimedia enhanced communications services, today announced a collaboration with QUALCOMM (NASDAQ: QCOM) to bring next generation enhanced services, such as multimedia messaging, voice solutions and mobile Internet solutions, to BREW-enabled wireless devices.
"As the pioneer of wireless communications technology, QUALCOMM is naturally positioned to accelerate the emergence of a genuinely useful wireless Internet," said Peggy Johnson, president of QUALCOMM Internet Services. "QUALCOMM is delighted to be working with Comverse, which continues to demonstrate its leadership in the wireless space."
"Comverse is aggressively expanding its relationships with handset and network infrastructure vendors," said Zeev Bregman, Chief Executive Officer of Comverse. "By optimizing our field-proven enhanced services to work with QUALCOMM's BREW technology, and by developing entirely new applications that could not exist without this new platform, we continue to stay on the forefront of innovation and to maintain our commitment to promoting quality of experience for users regardless of what device they may be using, wherever they may be in the world."
The collaboration combines QUALCOMM's position as a leader of innovative, digital wireless communications products and services with Comverse's world-leading experience in deploying the most advanced network based value-added services. As a result, users worldwide will get a next generation user experience - one that is more intuitive, easy-to-use and attractive.
QUALCOMM's BREW platform is a thin, standardised execution environment that resides in handsets. Native BREW applications are written in C/C++. While BREW supports programming in other languages, such as Java and XML, C/C++ is used as the primary language by significantly more developers worldwide than any other language, according to International Data Corp. QUALCOMM's BREW initiative is the only approach that offers developers, OEMs and carriers a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless applications development, device configuration, application distribution, and billing and payment. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers, the BREW application platform and porting tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that enables developers and their carrier customers to get applications to market and coordinates the billing and payment processes for them. Carriers' BREW-based services will enable consumers to customise their cell phones by downloading applications over the air from a carrier's application download server.
Comverse will work to build a variety of new applications that leverage the unique capabilities of the BREW platform for both existing and future network generations. Initially the focus will be on applications which enhance messaging for CDMA One/CDMA 2000 networks, and which seamlessly combine voice and data. Other areas of exploration include prepaid solutions and new approaches for mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). QUALCOMM and Comverse will also support each other in 3GPP and 3GPP2 standards bodies.
