Next generation technology, products and services from Trend Micro significantly readdress the whole approach to viruses, malicious code and content security.

Marlow, England, 12 November 2001 - Trend Micro (Nasdaq: TMIC, TSE: 4704), a worldwide leader in network antivirus and Internet content security solutions is pleased to announce InterScan Messaging Security Suite for SMTP 5.0. The product forms part of Trend Micro’s next generation of solutions and services designed to improve the way viruses and other malicious code are handled in the enterprise and to provide greatly enhanced control and response time.

If a new, e-mail-based virus is in circulation, Trend Micro's InterScan Message Security Suite provides immediate protection with its Outbreak Prevention Policy (OPP). In such cases, Trend Micro instigates a protective measure, which blocks the new virus at the gateway, using eManager's content-filter function. This OPP can be automatically downloaded and used via the InterScan Messaging Security Suite. This ensures that the corporate network is protected until the new virus pattern is available.

Using the new OPP features, the network administrator can configure the Messaging Security Suite in such a way that the network is in contact with the manufacturer at 15-minute intervals in order to check for new virus updates. The Trend Micro InterScan Message Security Suite also offers an improved filter function for file extensions. The program no longer blocks files on the basis of their file extensions, but instead it identifies the real file type involved. Using this file type analysis feature, the program can recognise, for example, a camouflaged e-mail attachment with a .txt extension in which an infected .exe file is actually concealed. The file can then be blocked, preventing it from slipping through the filter and causing havoc throughout the network.

"Providing these features makes Trend Micro's InterScan Messaging Security Suite 5.0 much more than an antivirus software solution", said Raimund Genes, President of Europe Operations. "With this new product we are providing a messaging management tool designed to make the IT administrator's job a lot easier."

Additional features offered by Trend Micro's InterScan Messaging Security Suite:

Deletes and removes mass mail viruses in real time at the Internet gateway. InterScan Messaging Security Suite prevents future spreading and protects valuable email resources from useless virus generated emails.

Policy-based management. Multi-level virus and content-filtering policies can be defined on a single Trend Micro InterScan Message Security Suite server in order to ensure that a company's email policy is observed. These policies can be customised to suit individual requirements.

Web-based management console and quarantine manager. Both features make it easier to manage the Trend Micro InterScan Message Security Suite.

An NT version of Trend Micro's InterScan Messaging Security Suite is expected to ship in Q4 2001, followed by a Unix version in the first quarter of 2002.
