Primagraphics launches FBI-approved fingerprint scanner Wednesday 14 November 2001 PDF Print CAMBRIDGE, UK, November 14, 2001 - Primagraphics (www.primagraphics.net), has introduced its 5200 series 12-bit greyscale 500 dpi precision scanner, which meets the stringent FBI Appendix F specification for fingerprint scanning. This specification is regarded as a de-facto standard for fingerprint scanners and defines the scanning accuracy, linearity, and uniformity that are required. It also includes a rigorous compliance test procedure. The Primagraphics 5200 series scanner has been designed for demanding applications, where high quality and consistent performance are required. It features a very fast scanning speed and low power consumption, and operation is fully programmable via the SCSI interface. High geometric accuracy and spatial resolution, combined with a greyscale resolution of 12-bits per pixel, make it ideal for the scanning of fingerprint forms where a consistent contrast ratio is required. The 5200 scanner combines the latest CCD arrays with state-of-the-art electronics to provide a fast greyscale scanning capability. The scanning head incorporates a linear array with 5000 elements, which is driven by a precision mechanism. The overall resolution is programmable up to a maximum of 5000 pixels and 7000 lines. Reduced resolution scans can be performed in integer steps from 2:1 to 16:1 of the maximum resolution. Lighting is carefully controlled within the scanner to ensure that the corrected CCD response over the whole scanning area is uniform. Global offset and gain adjustment of the CCD analogue signal can be performed in software to maximise the dynamic range of the digitisation circuitry for a particular type of document. This improves the contrast of the scanned image, and is especially useful for faint documents. A software programmable gain and offset table is provided to compensate for the effects of variations in the sensitivity of the individual elements in the sensor array. The unit supports data transfers up to 10MB/s via a SCSI bus. The large internal RAM buffer allows the host computer to accept data at its own speed, without the need to stop the scan at frequent intervals. A full size 10 inch x 14 inch (254mm x 356mm) 12-bit monochrome scan can be performed in 20 seconds allowing around 1,000 documents to be scanned per working day. Primagraphics fingerprint scanners are in use in police forces throughout the world. Their robust design and the long-term support provided (minimum 10 years), make them a popular choice for police departments wanting a high throughput industrial scanner. The 5200 series scanners can also be used for scanning detailed drawings such as maps and plans.
