XO Communications, a leading provider of communications services to business customers in the UK, today launched XO E-Screen, a network-based mail screening service allowing customers to set a security policy specifically for their e-mail. As well as preventing viruses and other forms of email abuse before they enter and damage a customer’s network, E-Screen allows customers to control outgoing mail ensuring legal disclaimers are present and that the leakage of confidential file types like spreadsheets or CAD files is prevented.
XO Communications has implemented Clearswift ES Service Provider from its technology partner Clearswift Corporation. The service is branded as XO E-Screen, with the software running on XO’s UK network. The software checks all of an XO customer’s email against their own individual policy before XO forwards it to the customers own mail server, or conveys email from the mail server onto the Internet. XO is the first communications service provider to utilise this software and will be collaborating with Clearswift Corporation on the development of future features and functionality.
XO E-Screen is designed to deal with current virus and worm threats as well as allowing customer to proactively avoid future “malware” releases. Unlike other services, XO E-Screen is designed as a mail screening service that can be used against a wider range of threats including spam, denial of service attacks and even some forms of industrial espionage.
XO E-Screen is designed to give customers a range of controls applicable to all incoming or outgoing mail. The service currently recognises over 135 different file types that can be blocked or stripped out of the mail for closer examination, including executables, images, video, sound, documents, CAD and encrypted files. These controls can prevent files entering the company, as well as stopping attachments such as spreadsheets containing confidential financial data being sent outside of the network.
Using XO E-Screen, a company can proactively prevent the file types usually associated with harmful content from every arriving on their mail server. By stopping well-known methods of virus infection such as .vbs or .exe files, XO E-Screen can reject new viruses or worms even before antidotes have been developed. The anti-virus facility is regularly updated with new anti-virus definitions checked every ten minutes. In cases where an attempt is made to disable a mail server by sending huge attachments, XO E-Screen can be configured to reject oversized inbound emails and stop valuable bandwidth being used up.
The service can detect and stop obscene email. A list of key words is used to search for prohibited words or phrases in the subject line, message body and attachments of incoming and outgoing email. XO believes this will be an effective tool in minimising the risks of staff sending and receiving material that could lead to legal action and damage to a company’s reputation. Compliance to company email rules can be enforced further by the service automatically appending legal disclaimers.
XO E-Screen is the latest managed service provided by XO through its Security Operations Centre (SOC), a 24x7x365 monitoring and rapid response facility staffed with a specialist security team and with a variety of back-up systems to ensure resiliency. Other managed services include managed firewalls and virtual private networks (VPNs). The service is available immediately and is charged per user per month. The service is only available to customers with their own mail server.
