Regulatory Body Uses TS.Census To Manage IT Assets

Tally Systems, the leading IT asset management specialists, today announced that the Financial Services Authority (FSA), the city watchdog, has chosen TS.Census to audit their IT assets. Tally Systems’ Census Recognition Technology will keep track of all the software and hardware on the FSA’s network of 3,000 desktop PCs.

Rob Johnson, Support Systems Analyst, Financial Services Authority, says, “Tally Systems provided us with an inventory tool to monitor licences and check what software has been rolled out to maintain control of the network. TS.Census enables us to monitor what hardware we have, to ensure it can cope with any proposed upgrades. It has a powerful reporting function that gives us real-time information on our network hardware and software. Tally Systems also provideS us with a monthly product recogniton update, which has proved to be very useful.”

TS.Census is being rolled out across the FSA, allowing the IT Team to actively police the network. It can now ensure that it has no more software programmes than licenses, and no more licences than it needs. It also enables them to track rogue programmes that could leave the network vulnerable to hackers, or other threats, be they internal or external.

“Desktop asset management should be the basis of any good IT strategy. Without it, it is easy for large enterprises to lose control of their network,” Tally Systems’ Vice-President EMEA, John Mahon, comments, “Not knowing what software is being run leaves a business vulnerable to charges of software piracy. Being able to produce a complete, accurate and up-to-date software inventory is a starting point for many IT initiatives, and therefore it is vital for good business practice.”

“Perhaps it’s clichéd, but accurately knowing what you have is the starting point of all projects,” adds Mahon. “Despite the glamorous image, it’s amazing how many companies have such poor information on the desktop IT assets that they own. IT managers continue to come under pressure to keep senior management happy, making sure that there will be no public embarrassment due to pirated software, or internal embarrassment due to overspending on unnecessary software. In addition to the usual mix of technology and migration planning there is now a renewed demand on IT management to demonstrate better ROI. Our software helps with that first basic step of identifying and tracking what you have on your network, to enable better informed downstream decisions”

The FSA was created through the merger of ten regulatory bodies. As these organisations were brought together under one roof, it presented a great challenge for the IT Team bringing together the different networKs in one domain.

Following the mergers, the IT Team turned to Tally Systems to help with its many problems. The FSA used Census Recognition Technology to audit its hardware and software, carry out daily sweeps of the network to find out what versions of software were running, and roll out upgrades overnight. This allowed the FSA to control and integrate its hardware and software, ensuring there was a common standard and one network.
