New Product Series To Debut in 2002 Will Leverage Current Auspex Technology
to Embrace Storage Virtualization and New Non-Proprietary Storage Model

Santa Clara, CA, November 19, 2001 — Auspex Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASPX), a leading provider of enterprise storage solutions, today announced a product roadmap that will move the company beyond its origins as a pioneer in Network Attached Storage (NAS). Products now under development will build on Auspex’s existing technology to provide a new non-proprietary storage model that will significantly reduce a company’s storage costs through storage virtualization, central management of heterogeneous enterprise data assets, and open access to major vendors’ storage subsystems.

As part of the new initiative, Auspex is also forging strategic relationships that will help pave the way for open-systems storage management as well as developing a series of industry-first capabilities designed to automate various storage processes. Those new features are expected to include content-aware, network-aware and demand-aware functionality permitting intelligent file categorization, intelligent file movement or placement, and intelligent allocation of processors based on workload.

The first product in the new Auspex line is scheduled for release in early 2002. Further details will be announced at the StorageNet conference in December.

“Our product strategy reflects the industry’s move toward making all data available through a common portal via storage virtualization, but we plan to take that concept further by becoming the first vendor to offer open access to multiple storage subsystems as well as add new capabilities like content-aware file categorization,” said Bob Iacono, Vice President of Marketing for Auspex Systems.

“In this way, we can meet the market demand for a universal storage management solution that uses an organization’s existing resources, combines the file sharing capabilities of the NAS architecture with the various benefits of SANs, and ultimately increases ROI,” Iacono said. “No other storage vendor is as close to fulfilling that vision as Auspex.”

Auspex set the stage for the current product direction with the new NS3000 series of network servers the company released last May. With those servers, Auspex introduced a modular architecture that physically separates the data storage subsystem from the intelligent engine that performs front-end data management functions. That engine will form the foundation of the company’s new products, offering capabilities ranging from secure cross-platform file sharing to data replication and other disaster recovery strategies.

The new products will augment Auspex’s complete line of storage solutions, including the NS3000 series and the small, low-cost Auspex server announced last week. This occupies roughly half the space of a typical Auspex server for flexible placement in the office environment, while delivering the same market-leading performance as a full-sized Auspex system.

About Auspex Systems

Auspex introduced the world’s first Network Attached Storage (NAS) server shortly after its founding in 1987, creating a new breed of storage appliance capable of delivering significant performance and administrative benefits over general-purpose file servers. Auspex’s enterprise-class network servers are used by customers around the world because of their advanced feature set, including the industry’s highest scalability and most secure UNIX and Windows data sharing. The company is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, with sales offices and channel partners throughout the U.S. and around the globe. Its shares are traded on the Nasdaq under the symbol ASPX.
