·Real-time access to product availability / order status

·Fully integrated in to ERP system

·Customer service / retention improved

London 19th November 2001. Siemens Building Technologies AG (SBT) chose Data Technology Plc to build, deliver and maintain their first B2B eCommerce application, Web Shop, for their HVAC Product division.

Siemens HVAC Products Division manufactures and distributes products for controlling and operating heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems. The Web Shop was developed specifically to improve the level of customer service and to encourage their continuing loyalty. Marc Knaff, Manager of Internet Business Development at the HVAC Products Division said, “The nature of our customers’ business means most need access to real-time information outside normal business hours. By developing Web Shop we are delivering a higher level of service that makes a real demonstrable difference. We are enabling our customers to deliver accurate information to their clients and, with access to real-time information, helping them to manage their ongoing projects.”

Web Shop replicates the HVAC Products Division’s catalogue and is fully integrated with their BPCS ERP system. This means, when a customer logs on they see real-time information presented in a unique and personalised way. For example: each customer may have unique prices which he/she will see in the Web Shop; current product availability can be checked; orders can be placed; special delivery arrangements can be made; the current status of the customer’s account can be reviewed. Knaff added, “The difference between what we offer and our competitors is real-time. Some other companies allow customers to place orders online, but in reality the data is collected, then printed and eventually faxed or “e-mailed” to the head office for processing. This means that customers often don’t have 100% up-to-date information, which adds risk and makes managing their projects more difficult. This approach frequently causes delays in the end-to-end business process”

With integration into their primary systems a key requirement, SBT invited 5 companies to tender for the development of Web Shop. A preference for Microsoft solutions had been expressed. However Data Technology believed that Lotus Domino from IBM would deliver the best results and were able to demonstrate the powerful integration capabilities that would meet their business requirement. Gus Machado, Chairman of Data Technology said, “ SBT’s business applications resided on an AS/400 whilst their technical HVAC catalogue sat on a SQL Server. In just two days we were able to build a prototype using the sophisticated integration capabilities and functionality of the Domino product that was to give us the lead over the competition.”

Machado added, “We delivered a highly scalable solution that is being rolled out across 18 countries; equally this type of solution could be cost-effectively developed for a small single site implementation.”

Knaff concluded, “This project is already live in one country, with four more countries scheduled to go live within 12 months. It has been successful because we had the support of Siemens Building Technologies’ senior management and the right mix of skilled professionals from Data Technology and our internal dedicated team. As we move forward, the application will be rolled out in 18 countries and our future plans include integrating our Web Shop with SAP.”
