VECTOR HAS FINGER ON THE SOFTWARE PULSE Monday 26 November 2001 PDF Print Tamworth, Staffordshire – 26th November 2001– UK based PC management specialist, Vector Networks, has announced immediate availability of its LANutil v5.1. This latest full release includes several major new features including passive software metering, software asset management, an SQL wizard, Wake-on-LAN/Wake-on-WAN and improved reporting tools. LANutil can help IT managers to keep track of hardware and software assets more easily and more cost effectively than was previously possible. Passive software metering collects run-time statistics on packages, including how long a specific package has been in focus on particular PCs, allowing IS managers to see how often applications are used as well as how many users have them installed. This will help managers to make more accurate assessments of which applications are really important to an organisation as well as highlighting where unlicensed software is being used. Geoffrey Webster, Chief Executive, Federation Against Software Theft (FAST), says: “FAST encourages and works with companies to help ensure that they are using licensed software. We look to software developers like Vector Networks to deliver the tools that make life easier for overworked systems administrators that are tasked with keeping track of installed software”. Webster continues: “Passive software metering and simplified software asset management can only make life easier for such hard pressed IT professionals as they endeavour to 'keep legal'”. Software asset management now brings together a new Package Policy Manager for defining who in the organisation should have which application packages, Inventory to say who actually has which packages, and Metering to say which packages are being used. This data is aggregated to provide high-level information for IS managers to exploit. They need it in prioritising their scarce resources around managing the assets on their network. The SQL wizard has been introduced to make it easier to define dynamic PC groups and database views, using PCs selected on combinations of characteristics held in LANutil’s ODBC-compatible database. The Wake-on-LAN and Wake-on-WAN features allow support staff to power up suitably equipped PCs over local or remote links, so that the need for site visits can be drastically reduced. This allows organisations with remote offices to distribute and install new software at any time, avoiding the need to leave PCs and servers powered on while waiting for a scheduled software distribution. For example, an anti-virus update can be applied to remote PCs at night, even though users will have powered off their PCs before going home. Also included in LANutil v5.1 is an improved change reporting capability, the ability to visualise full PC history, enhanced hardware inventory capability and support for the collection of IP addresses and subnet information across multiple network interface cards. Inventory changes can now be easily interrogated with Crystal Reports and then be printed out or published in HTML format. Colin Bartram, Product Marketing Director, Vector Networks, says: “The comprehensive combination of software auditing and metering make it even easier for IS managers to ensure that they are only using legal software. Wake-on-LAN/Wake-on-WAN will allow support staff to run audits at night, even if staff turn their PCs off before going home, ensuring that no PC remains unchecked. In some cases, it is better not to let sleeping PCs lie.” Pricing and availability The new version of LANutil is available immediately from authorised Vector Networks resellers.
