Schlumberger Austin Technology Center Deploys 3.7 TB Tuesday 27 November 2001 PDF Print New Auspex NS3010 Provides Data Consolidation & Secure File Sharing for Global Software Development Team; Extends Auspex Presence in Oil & Gas Industry Santa Clara, CA, November 27, 2001 — Auspex Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASPX), a leading provider of enterprise-level data storage and delivery solutions, announced today that the Austin Technology Center of Schlumberger Oil and Gas Information Solutions has deployed a 3.7 TB Auspex network server to provide consolidated data storage and secure file sharing for its 300-person software development team. The center has been using Auspex servers since 1990 and purchased the new NS3010 system to accommodate ongoing growth in its data stores. The new server is being used to store and share code created for Schlumberger’s GeoQuest seismic interpretation and processing software and other software development projects. It also houses the center’s e-mail, Web files that are used to distribute the latest versions of Schlumberger software to the company’s developers around the globe, and a variety of other applications. The NS3010 will scale up to 12 TB as Schlumberger’s storage needs expand. The Xtreme Reliability (XR) and Xtreme Availability (XA) models of the Auspex NS3000 series scale up to 45.5 TB and 68 TB, respectively, representing the highest scalability in the industry. Those models are scheduled for release this month. “Centralized data storage is a necessity when you’re doing the kind of global development projects we do, and that is what led me to Auspex’s network attached storage solutions more than a decade ago,” said Kathy O’Brien, Manager of Austin Computing Services for Schlumberger. “We continue to use Auspex servers because of the continuous performance and secure file sharing they have delivered over the years, and we have now migrated to the NS3010 because it has the scalability that will allow us to grow without adding or replacing servers prematurely.” The new Schlumberger installation reflects Auspex’s strength in the oil and gas industry. Auspex has been providing highly scalable, high-performance storage solutions to petroleum companies around the world since the early 1990s, with a dedicated Energy Group that focuses exclusively on meeting the needs of the energy sector. Auspex network servers currently manage hundreds of terabytes of data in exploration and production environments around the globe for seismic processing, seismic interpretation, reservoir engineering, software development, and oil and gas trading. The Schlumberger Austin Technology Center purchased a bilingual Auspex server to permit the addition of Windows users to its current UNIX-based applications. Auspex’s industry-exclusive native support for both Windows and UNIX platform eliminates performance penalties as well as difficulties in cross-platform file locking that can occur with systems that utilize emulation software to enable heterogeneous file sharing. Auspex automatically synchronizes security and permissions on both platforms, including setting locks that prevent users on either operating system from writing to a file when it is in use. “An organization like the Schlumberger Austin Technology Center demands reliable performance, uncompromising data integrity, dependable technical support, and sophisticated data management capabilities,” said Tom Guidish, Manager, Energy Industry for Auspex Systems. “The fact that the center has used Auspex servers for nearly 11 years and continues to return to Auspex to meet its data storage and delivery needs is a strong endorsement of our products.” Auspex file servers are used by industries and enterprises around the world to optimize storage management infrastructures and provide fast, reliable access to multi-terabytes of consolidated UNIX and Windows data. They offer a rich range of data management tools for ensuring high availability, high-speed backup and replication, and maximum uptime. In addition to providing the largest storage capacity in the industry, the NS3000 series offers a unique universal data sharing capability that enables any user to access any stored file at any time from a single data image with full read/write privileges. This feature speeds development in collaborative software and engineering environments, boosts efficiency in supply chain management systems, and increases productivity in other environments utilizing extremely large files. About Auspex Systems Auspex introduced the world’s first NAS server a decade ago and is the network storage server of choice for Global 500 companies, including customers in the software development, oil and gas exploration, semiconductor, manufacturing and Internet industries. Auspex’s enterprise-level, multi-terabyte solutions are designed for storage applications requiring secure Windows and UNIX data sharing from a single data image, server consolidation or continuous data availability.
