500 GB NAS Appliance Scales to 4 TB, Offers Market’s Top Performance
in Small Package

Santa Clara, CA, November 30th, 2001 — Auspex Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASPX), a leading provider of enterprise storage solutions, has introduced a small, low-cost Network Attached Storage (NAS) server called the Auspex brat that is the company’s first NAS appliance designed to sit anywhere in the enterprise. All components come installed in a 52” high x 28” wide cabinet that occupies roughly half the space of a typical Auspex server for flexible placement in the office environment, while delivering the same market-leading performance as a full-sized Auspex system.

The brat is sold exclusively through the channel and ships in a standard configuration designed for small to mid-sized companies or departments of larger enterprises. It includes 500 GB of storage, expandable in 500 GB increments up to 4 TB; Auspex’s NDMP-based TurboReplicator software for use in conjunction with the customer’s backup and restore application; a bilingual operating system that permits secure file sharing across UNIX and Windows platforms; two RAID controllers for better throughput; one network interface card of the customer’s choice; and a power distribution unit built into the cabinet.

The system comes with RAID 5 by default or with any combination of RAID 0, 1 or 5 specified by the customer, making it possible to use different security strategies for different kinds of data. The ability to order the system preconfigured for the desired RAID structure reduces setup time and helps cut out-of-the-box deployment time to one hour.

The brat clocks in at a record-breaking 19,755 IOPS in UNIX environments and 55 MBPS in Windows settings, like the Auspex NS3000 family of network servers introduced earlier this year. This enables IT departments to deliver enterprise-class performance to end users at very low cost, contrasting sharply with low-end machines from other vendors that are based on older and slower technology.

“The Auspex brat gives us the ability to meet our customers’ need for a high-performance storage solution without going through complex configuration chores that require a lot of time and a high degree of expertise,” said Jim Maclam, President and CEO of AtPac, a California-based reseller. “We have already sold several of these systems and expect that this product will add an important new revenue stream for us, both as a ready-to-go box and in add-on sales generated as customers expand capacity or add premium software options.”

“This new server gives the marketplace a robust, low-cost storage and data delivery platform that minimizes total cost of ownership by allowing up to 4 TB of data to be managed on a single machine, and it also simplifies the sales and installation process for our channel partners,” said Bob Lastorka, Director of Channels, Eastern U.S., for Auspex Systems. “We expect the combination of these two factors to generate strong sales for the resellers and system integrators who represent us in the channel.”

The Auspex brat is available through certified Auspex channel partners. For information on participating resellers, e-mail or call.+44 (0) 118 940 7300. Each system includes a one-year warranty on hardware and software, next-business-day service, software maintenance releases and patches, and 24 x 7 telephone support.
