J.D. Edwards, a leading provider of agile, collaborative solutions for the connected economy, and Unisys, an e-business solutions company, jointly announced today that they are forming a strategic alliance to offer J.D. Edwards OneWorld with the Unisys e-@ction Enterprise Server ES7000. By combining J.D. Edwards’ collaborative business applications with sophisticated hardware from Unisys, customers will have a powerful, highly scalable, open architecture for the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform to compete and win in a collaborative commerce economy.

The flexibility of J.D. Edwards’ software and the powerful Unisys ES7000 server combine to provide growing companies with a comprehensive software/hardware package for Microsoft-based architecture. By leveraging each other’s strengths, J.D. Edwards and Unisys now make advanced collaborative commerce more affordable.

The Unisys ES7000 is based on the Unisys Cellular MultiProcessing (CMP) server architecture, designed for enterprise-class e-business computing. The reliability, availability and scalability benefits of the CMP architecture — well known to users of large-scale computers — are now available in computing environments using Microsoft and Intel technologies, which have broader market reach.

The Unisys ES7000 is the only server in the industry that takes full advantage of Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server's support for 32-processor scalability. Windows 2000 Datacenter Server is the most powerful and functional server operating system ever offered by Microsoft. It is designed to accommodate the most demanding levels of availability and scalability for server consolidation, line of business and dot-com solutions, large data warehouses, econometric analysis, large-scale simulations in science and engineering, and online transaction processing.

As a part of the marketing alliance, Unisys will open an ES7000 Center of Excellence at J.D. Edwards’ corporate headquarters in Denver, Colorado. The Center of Excellence will be dedicated to optimising the performance of J.D. Edwards OneWorld collaborative commerce applications on the Unisys ES7000 and providing performance characterisation, implementation and sizing guidelines for joint prospects and customers.

According to a TPC-W benchmark, an industry-standard measure of server performance, the Unisys e-@ction Enterprise Server ES7000 is the world’s fastest server for e-commerce by a margin of 38 percent.* In a recent TPC-C benchmark, the Unisys ES7000 achieved 236 percent of the performance of any other Windows-based single server, becoming the only non-UNIX/RISC server in single-system TPC-C Top Ten.**

* TPC-W Note

In the TPC-W benchmark test, the Unisys ES7000 delivered 10,439.6 Web interactions per second (WIPS) @ 100,000 items ("items" indicates the relative size of a simulated online store). The cost per WIPS was 6.73 @ 100,000 items. The configuration is currently available and is based on a Unisys ES7000 equipped with 16 900-MHz Intel® Pentium® III Xeon 32-bit processors and 6 Gbytes of memory.


** TPC-C Note

In the TPC-C benchmark test, setting a new world record for a single server based on Microsoft and Intel technology, the Unisys ES7000 achieved 165,218.71 transactions per minute (tpmC) at a cost per transaction of .33. The test was conducted using the Transaction Processing Council's "C" methodology for measuring online transaction processing (OLTP) performance. The complete configuration is anticipated to be available March 10, 2002; the ES7000 is available today.

The test configuration is based on a Unisys ES7000 with 32 Intel 900-MHz Pentium III Xeon processors, 64 Gbytes of memory and Emulex VI networking. The configuration includes Microsoft's release of its Windows Datacenter Server Limited Edition operating system and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition database with Service Pack 2.
