Geest achieves 99.97% service levels with Tesco having implemented PkMS
London - 4 December 2001 - Geest plc, Europe's leading supplier of fresh
prepared food and produce, has teamed up with Manhattan Associates to
implement the PkMS warehouse management system at its new centralized
distribution centre in Spalding, Lincolnshire. PkMS is now managing the
distribution of Geest's salads, soups, sauces, dips, dressings and ready
meals to all major multiples throughout the UK and Northern Europe. Since
implementing the system, Geest has achieved service levels of 99.97% with
Tesco, based on the supermarket retailer's own calculations.
Working closely with its customers and the manufacturing operations, Geest
reengineered its distribution operations and centralised them in a brand new
facility. A manual paper-based environment has been upgraded to a paperless
Radio Frequency driven operation, managed with PkMS' advanced task
management functions. The overall project, including the design and
construction of a state-of-the-art chilled facility, was completed in a mere
eight months, from the initial briefing in January 2001 to "go-live" this
Geest supplies a wide assortment of produce and fresh prepared foods, and is
continuously experiencing growth in the volume and variety of goods
processed at its Spalding facility. A critical requirement for any of
Geest's systems is the ability to manage a tightly controlled short shelf
life inventory, where lot and date information must be tracked throughout
the supply chain. SmartInfo, part of Manhattan's optimisation offering, is
now being rolled out to provide better real-time visibility into the supply
Terry Moore, general manager of logistics for Geest, says, "It has been a
tough nut installing a new WMS in a brand new DC inside six weeks, but
together we have cracked it, and our success puts Geest at the forefront of
the supply chain for years to come. Our operation runs around the clock and
we rely heavily on Manhattan's immediate response and strong support team."
Geest is using Manhattan Associates' PkMS distributed N-Tier and SmartInfo
solutions, fully utilising the Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, SQL
Server 2000, the Windows2000 IIS v5.0 Web Server, Microsoft's XML Parser and
Digital Dash board. The system makes full use of the LXE Radio Frequency
equipment, supplied by Manhattan Associates to enable real-time data
communications within the operation.
Jeff Baum, Manhattan Associates' senior vice president of International,
comments, "Geest is great to work with because their distribution team takes
strong ownership of the system and they intimately involved their customers
in the overall design. Manhattan continues to focus on providing a critical
systems link between food producers and retailers through our extended
supply chain execution platform."
Geest is one of the leading fresh prepared food and produce companies in the
UK, and a PLC whose business focuses entirely on fresh foods, specialising
in retailer 'own label'. Geest's extensive portfolio of products are
supplied from sites across Europe, including the UK, Belgium, France and
