More Intelligent Network Mapping With Enhanced Device Identification And Active Discovery, Faster Problem Resolution Via Enhanced SNMP Monitoring And Multiple Interface Support

December 5, 2001 - Ipswitch, Inc., a leading supplier of Internet productivity software for Windows, today announced the release of WhatsUp Gold 7.0, the latest version of its leading network management software. Already established as a superior cost-effective solution for network mapping, monitoring, notification and performance reporting, WhatsUp Gold 7.0’s enhanced functionality provides network managers greater understanding of their networks, reducing guesswork and allowing them to pinpoint and resolve problems faster than ever. Improvements to the user interface also help administrators make better informed decisions since customisation features allow for improved network views and quicker navigation.

“WhatsUp Gold performs many tasks that network managers previously would have to do manually,” said Ipswitch President Roger C. Greene. “With WhatsUp Gold, managers have to do less to maintain their management frameworks but at the same time get much more detailed, relevant information. WhatsUp Gold acts as an assistant to the network manager to maximise efficiency and identify ways to creatively head off problems and address them before they impact business operations. That’s a lot of added value for a product that remains easy-to-use and can be deployed in a matter of days, not months.”

Reduced map maintenance with enhanced device identification

New functionality in WhatsUp Gold 7.0’s SmartScan allows administrators to perform secondary device checks to discover custom devices, services on non-standard ports and end-user applications. WhatsUp Gold automatically captures elements along with icons and management policies pre-defined for specific devices, saving time in map creation and maintenance. A new Active Discovery feature performs scheduled scans of the network to identify any new devices and automatically map them along with appropriate monitoring policies and notifies you of the new devices. This translates into significant time savings, eliminating the need to manually apply network change orders.
Faster fault isolation with enhanced SNMP monitoring, multiple interface support eliminates guesswork
Faster fault isolation and a reduced number of false alarms occur with WhatsUp Gold 7.0’s enhanced monitoring features. Improved SNMP monitoring checks devices for acceptable ranges of specific MIB variables and the duration of an exceeded range event before generating an alert. This eliminates the need for separate high/low monitors and reduces false alerts due to temporary spikes. Enhanced multiple interface support allows monitoring multiple interfaces per device – either physical or virtual – allowing faster identification of the root causes of network failures. Additionally, a new active links tool color-codes links between SNMP-enabled devices to indicate their up or down status. At a glance, network managers can reduce the time to identify and solve a problem since they can see which link is down and attribute the outage to a specific device interface.

“I have a great amount of confidence that I can identify network problems much quicker when using WhatsUp Gold 7.0,” commented Anthony Valuikas, a senior network engineer with OAO Corp., a contracting group that monitors a Line of Business on the Federal Aviation Administration’s WAN.

“Improvements to the device identification capabilities and the new link colors feature are fantastic. I don’t have time to be guessing where an outage occurred and why. I need to be able to identify and resolve problems instantly to ensure maximum uptime for my network. WhatsUp Gold lets me do just that.”

Quicker navigation, greater customisation with updated user interface

Several improvements to WhatsUp Gold 7.0’s user interface further maximise administrators’ ability to get the most out of their networks. WhatsUp Gold 7.0’s updated, more intuitive Web interface makes the software more versatile than ever. Administrators have the ability to localise WhatsUp Gold into other languages, which is especially attractive to international users. New tab bars make it easier to group different views of map data by placing the information in one window. New colour coded dependencies arrows assist in defining device dependencies, which reduce unnecessary polling and false alerts for devices downstream of a network outage. Administrators can also define and import vector objects and clip art into galleries for improved map annotation and customisation.

Better reports management

WhatsUp Gold 7.0 provides several new ways to enhance the distribution of management information to network stakeholders with less work by the administrator. Device types, maps, monitors and notification data are readily transportable to external applications in XML or INI formats. Administrators can also convert notifications from text to speech for “eyes off” notification of operations personnel. They can also reduce the number of manual reports by scheduling regular performance reporting at specific intervals for on-demand viewing. Reports can be saved in MS Word, PDF and HTML formats and e-mailed to a list of recipients or viewed via a Web browser.

Price and availability

WhatsUp Gold is available for a UK list price of £560. Free upgrades to version 7.0 are available to anyone with a valid service agreement. An annual service agreement can be purchased for £255.
