Leverages Auspex’s Exclusive Parallel Local Backup and
High-Speed Data Transfer

Santa Clara, CA, December 6, 2001 — Auspex Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASPX), a provider of enterprise storage solutions, announced today that its new NS3000 series of Network Attached Storage (NAS) servers has been certified for interoperability with Legato Systems, Inc.’s (NASDAQ: LGTO) NetWorker® 6.1.1, the latest version of Legato’s backup and recovery software. The certification leverages both products’ compliance with the open-standard Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) to enable enterprises to perform high-speed local and remote backups and restores to and from tape libraries and drives.

The certification allows IT administrators to take advantage of a series of Auspex and Legato features designed to optimize backup and restore operations. These include a patented, industry-exclusive Auspex architecture allowing multiple backup jobs to run on parallel processors simultaneously; unique Auspex file-level and block-level data transfer engines that stream data from disk to tape at high speeds across the LAN-free data path to minimize impact on end users; and a Direct Access Restore function in Legato NetWorker that quickly positions tapes at the exact file location or locations, dramatically speeding data recovery by eliminating the need to scan tapes to find needed files.

Local and remote backup and restore operations can take place between two Auspex file servers or between a Solaris workstation and an Auspex file server, utilizing the TurboReplicator NDMP back/up restore software included in Auspex’s NetOS 4.1.

“This certification continues a long-standing relationship we have had with Legato to ensure interoperability between the latest products from both companies,” said Jeff D. Book, Auspex Director of Performance Engineering and Technology Partners. “It reflects our ongoing commitment to support all leading backup and restore software packages in order to provide our customers a variety of options for protecting enterprise data.”

“NDMP is an important means of enabling backup and restore operations and thereby advancing the principle of business without interruption,” said George Symons, vice president, product management and development, Legato Systems. “Together, Auspex and Legato are leveraging the power of NDMP to ensure that our customers have a smooth, robust backup and recovery solution to maximize their data protection and availability of business-critical information.”

The NDMP protocol allows NDMP-compliant applications, such as Legato NetWorker, to send messages over the network to NDMP hosts, such as the Auspex NS3000, to initiate and control backups and restores. The standard provides compatibility between any combination of NDMP-compliant network-attached servers, backup devices and management applications. It also significantly simplifies the data management process by centralizing backup control, reducing network traffic and enhancing backup performance. Network congestion is minimized because the data path and control path are separated.

Legato NetWorker 6.1.1 provides fast, reliable and complete data backup and recovery for heterogeneous enterprise and service provider environments. It includes an advanced indexing architecture that dramatically increases performance and scalability in backup and recovery operations. It also provides robust cluster support for Legato Automated Availability Manager, Sun Clusters, Hewlett Packard MCSG, Compaq TruCluster, IBM HACMP, and Microsoft Cluster Services.

Auspex file servers are used by industries and enterprises around the world to optimize storage management infrastructures and provide fast, reliable access to multi-terabytes of consolidated UNIX and Windows data. The new NS3000 network servers scale up to 68 TB of storage on a single system — by far the highest scalability in the industry — and offer the market’s fastest performance as well as native UNIX and Windows support for fast, secure cross-platform file sharing.
