TS.Census Keeps Track of IT Assets for Leading Financial Services Company

Tally Systems, the software asset management specialists, today announced that one of the UK’s leading unit trust and ISA companies, M&G Investments, has chosen TS.Census to manage its IT assets. Tally Systems’ market leading application will keep track of all the software and hardware, including 2,300 PCs, installed on M&G’s network at its offices in Chelmsford and London.

Michael Barclay, Senior Technician at M&G Investments, explained: “Previously we had to audit the PCs manually. It generally took two weeks to audit just 1,000 PCs. Now with TS.Census the audit of 2,300 PCs can be achieved in a matter of hours, and more importantly we can do desktop audits once a week, and maintain an up-to-date report of what is actually on the network. This means we always know what is going on.”

TS.Census saves M&G more than 1,200 man-hours, taking just a few hours to do an audit that would otherwise take up to six weeks. This allows M&G to audit its hardware and software on a weekly basis and maintain an up to date inventory.

Currently running on 1,500 desktop PCs in Chelmsford, and due to be rolled out across another 800 in London, TS.Census performs weekly sweeps, providing M&G with detailed reports on what software and hardware is installed on the network. By comparing the weekly reports, the IT team can see if any software or hardware has been installed or removed from the network. The information produced in the report is also used to monitor hardware and software usage and licence availability.

Barclay concludes, “As a company, M&G needed an inventory tool for ensuring our software licences are up-to-date. It is important that we can match up the software licences we have against the software that is being used on the desktops.”

John Mahon, Vice-President EMEA, Tally Systems comments, “With effective desktop asset management practices in place, it’s very easy for large enterprises to maintain control of all software installed on the network, who is using it and whether or not it is being used in compliance with existing software licence agreements. Companies such as M&G are prepared to produce complete, accurate and up-to-date software inventories on demand. M&G already realises the benefits of regular desktop audits, which are the starting points for many IT programmes. ”

TS.Census is the crucial first step in virtually any important IT project, software and hardware migrations, infrastructure planning or cost-effective software licence management. In a large corporate environment such as M&G, the simple act of gathering an inventory of IT systems and software is an immensely difficult task. Negotiating software licences, upgrading the IT infrastructure, supporting dispersed resources, unifying corporate software and Internet policy. All of these projects are workable only with PC asset management tools – such as TS.Census with its powerful reporting functions – that show what hardware and software there is, where it is, how it is being used and how it can be managed more efficiently.
