Relationships Support New Auspex Product Initiative

Santa Clara, CA, December 11, 2001 — Auspex Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASPX), a leading provider of enterprise storage solutions, announced today that it has joined the Brocade Fabric Threads Developer and JNI SANpartners™ programs to support the storage interoperability requirements of new products planned for Auspex’s NS3000 family of storage appliances. The relationships reflect Auspex efforts to reduce enterprise storage costs through central management of heterogeneous data assets and open access to major vendors’ storage subsystems, including Storage Area Networks (SANs).

As announced separately today at the StorageNext/Internet World conference in New York, Auspex will release a fabric-attached storage solution that will operate with SANs from multiple vendors to permit file-level access to SAN data. The Brocade and JNI programs are expected to facilitate development of that product and later enhancements.

Brocade offers the industry’s leading intelligent platform for networking storage, and JNI is the fastest growing host bus adapter (HBA) vendor in the Fibre Channel market.

“Our participation in the Brocade and JNI programs represents the first in a series of relationships we are forming to fulfill our vision of creating a new non-proprietary storage model,” said Lawrence Didsbury, Manager of Strategic Alliances for Auspex Systems. “As a Brocade Fabric Threads Developer and a JNI SANpartner, we will have access to two of the most aggressive storage interoperability initiatives in the industry, and that support is vital to the success of our efforts.”

The Brocade Fabric Threads Developer Program is designed to provide SAN hardware and software developers with the tools and resources to successfully develop applications and products with Brocade SilkWorm® fabric switches, the Brocade Fabric Operating System (Fabric OS™) and Brocade Fabric Services. Brocade Fabric Threads Developers include leading providers of SAN hardware and software solutions. These companies leverage the intelligence in Brocade SAN infrastructure to develop products that interoperate in multi-vendor storage networks.

The JNI SANpartners Program focuses on supporting the market need for interoperability among manufacturers of SAN hardware and management software. Analysis performed in JNI’s world-class System Integration Lab (SIL) will give Fibre Channel storage interconnect, subsystem and server original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) the opportunity to benefit from compatibility and interoperability testing in a SAN and Cluster environment. Upon completion of the analysis, the results will be disclosed to the program member, and reports will be posted on the JNI compatibility web site.

“We are delighted to welcome Auspex Systems to the Brocade Fabric Threads Developer Program. Together with our developers, we continue to lead the way in delivering new SAN capabilities and expanding the options for Brocade customers,” said Jack Cuthbert, Brocade Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Support Services. “By utilizing the Brocade Fabric OS and Brocade Fabric Access™, our partners can leverage the intelligence in Brocade infrastructure and offer new levels of SAN interoperability and management functionality to their customers.”

“Auspex is OEMing our Fibre Channel host bus adapter in some of its new NS3000 series products, and their participation in our JNI SANpartners Program is a natural extension of that relationship,” said Shaun Walsh, Vice President of Marketing, JNI Corporation. “By providing access to our System Integration Lab, the program will make it possible for Auspex to conduct key compatibility tests to help them achieve their goal of storage interoperability.”
