Eutelsat satellite capacity is to be utilised on December 12 for an exchange of messages between the United Kingdom, Canada and Italy to mark the centenary of the world’s first transatlantic wireless communication by Guglielmo Marconi.
The company is to use its recently launched ATLANTIC BIRD 2 satellite, dedicated to the father of wireless communication, Guglielmo Marconi, to provide multiple satellite links for the transmission of high-quality digital video between St John’s in Newfoundland (Canada), Poldhu in Cornwall (UK) and Rome.
The three countries are currently working together closely to plan the event to commemorate Marconi’s groundbreaking broadcast. At 4pm on December 12 1901, the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company’s station in Poldhu transmitted a message to St John’s. The signal travelled a distance of 2,880 Kilometres and heralded a new age of wireless transatlantic communication.
The planned celebrations will see a message from Her Majesty The Queen, transmitted to Newfoundland in the presence of Marconi’s grandson. In addition, a live satellite link will be used for an exchange of messages between the Governor General of Canada and the President of Italy. A key highlight of the day is to be provided by The Royal Navy who will recreate Marconi’s famous Spark experiment to be received in St John’s, Newfoundland. Eutelsat’s ATLANTIC BIRD 2 satellite will link all three locations throughout the day.
In addition to providing the link for the Marconi celebration, Eutelsat’s ATLANTIC BIRD 2 satellite provides a seamless platform for connections between North and South America, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and central Asian states.

A full rebroadcast of the event will be managed by Telespazio through HOT BIRD capacity at 13 degrees East (transponder 70, downlink frequency: 12.111 GHz, vertical polarisation, symbol rate. 27.500, FEC ¾)
