Philips organizes a User Interface Forum together with the Taiwanese 3G CLUB for joint product development with member companies.

TAIPEI – Taiwan and AACHEN - Germany, December 19, 2001 – Philips Speech Processing, a global trendsetter in speech recognition technology, will further penetrate the Asian market with its high-performance voice command and control speech recognition solutions.

Through their Asian headquarters, Philips Speech Processing – Voice Control aims to commercialize the newest VoCon technology via joint efforts with local companies and suppliers for the mobile handset industry. Philips places special emphasis on adding value to mobile devices and information appliances for upcoming communication market developments. "We expect that the combination of leading Philips technology together with the vivid, fast-time-to-market product creation capability of Asian companies will lead to a winning position for both parties in the mobile and information appliance segments." said Erwin Bouwense, Sales and Marketing Director of Philips Speech Processing – Voice Control. "Philips is prepared to offer its user interface technology to local companies for developing 3G products."

Since the Taiwanese government is aggressively promoting the development of 3G wireless communication technology, it was decided that Philips presents its comprehensive solutions on speech technology via the 3G CLUB, a membership organization established by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The main objective of the club is to accelerate the development and market exploration of 3G-related core technologies on wireless communication. Philips will join the 3G CLUB activities by organizing a User Interface Forum for the participating 3G CLUB member companies.

The kick-off workshop for the forum will take place in Taiwan on December 19, followed by 9 different speech-related working sessions in the 1st half of 2002. Topics of the first workshop will be:

Ø Speech solutions for mobile devices

Ø Mobile vision & research challenges

Ø User interface design & trends for mobile communication

Ø Creating high-end telephony services with speech recognition

Ease-of-use and personalization on the user interface are key elements for future product development. Speech, the most natural communication tool, is the best solution to solve user interface issues. During the working sessions Philips will introduce a number of advanced technologies and applications, including robust voice control, speaker identification, large vocabulary engine on small footprint, dialogue system, context-aware mobile platforms and design vision for 3G wireless communications.

The User Interface Forum will be jointly sponsored by three participating Philips business units: Philips Speech Processing – Telephony Solutions, Philips Speech Processing – Voice Control and Philips Design. In addition to the embedded solutions of Voice Control, speech recognition and language understanding technology for telephony applications - suitable for telecom, finance, banking, transportation and civil services - will be demonstrated by Telephony Solutions. Philips Design offers general product design services to Philips and other companies. Their work is notable for its the emphasis on human factors and ergonomics.
