ID DATA LAUNCHES NEW SMART CARD SUBSIDIARY Thursday 20 December 2001 PDF Print ID Data plc extends its global market reach by launching ChipPort Ltd and signing a joint venture agreement with the Pathfinder Telecom Group ID Data plc, the world’s sixth largest supplier of secure transaction systems and smart card services, announces the launch of ChipPort, to license ID Data’s smart card expertise and intellectual property to card manufacturers world-wide. As a wholly owned subsidiary of ID Data, ChipPort will benefit from the Group’s technology and silicon supply and is well positioned to provide a range of immediate and complete solutions. ChipPort offers card manufacturers the benefit of consultancy, training, silicon, chip modules, and applications in the banking, telephony and retail markets. There are approximately 200 card manufacturers with a strong local presence in their domestic market in 79 countries, capable of gaining sales of chip card applications through their historic commercial relationships. These manufacturers may not have in-house technology or specialised personnel to compete against established players. ID Data also announces an agreement with the Pathfinder Telecom Group to sell and build the latest in GSM smart SIM applications aimed at giving mobile operators the opportunity to reduce the cost of international call roaming. A three-way alliance between Pathfinder Telecom and Silcom Technologies will allow ID Data to break new ground with a range of exciting GSM applications on flash silicon aimed at improving the returns for global GSM operators. The innovative Pathfinder technology allows mobile telephone operators to control the network their subscribers’ use while roaming abroad. This technology also includes the facility to offer an easy to use pre-paid roaming service and has generated extensive interest from over 20 operators to date. Initial trial orders for the technology will be delivered in January 2002 and the parties expect to see volume sales commencing by the middle of next year. Don McQueen, CEO of Pathfinder Telecom said: “We were looking for a business partner who could work with us during product development and have the quality of infrastructure to build sales and then support product roll out. In ID Data we have found a partner who is rapidly building a reputation for being at the forefront of the GSM technology and is eminently capable of delivering world class products to our mutual clients.” Peter Cox, CEO of ID Data commented: “This agreement, together with the combined skills of the parties, will deliver significant returns for all concerned and once again demonstrates ID Data’s ability to find and structure technology to offer solutions ahead of the competition. The level of sales achieved will very much depend on who adopts the technology first but, with the current appetite to improve margins in the GSM world, this will drive consistent revenue over the next few years. The recent launch of ChipPort, which offers ID Data’s technology and intellectual property to card manufacturers worldwide, is also expected to add significant revenue and create new opportunities for the business.” - Ends - For further information, please contact: ID Data plc Peter Cox, CEO Email: firstname.lastname@example.org Tel: +44 (0) 1536 207 000 Pathfinder Development Limited Don McQueen, CEO Tel: +44(0) 870 607 1036 Email: email@example.com Issued by: Bankside Consultants Limited Henry Harrison-Topham / Russell Elliott Tel: +44 (0) 20 7444 4140 Email: firstname.lastname@example.org Notes to Editors: ID Data plc ID Data plc ("ID Data") is the world’s sixth largest supplier of secure transaction systems and smart card services to the international telephony, banking, retail and secure access sectors.
