What is AutoDoc?

AutoDoc is a search and navigation facility for automatically generated online documentation. The system, which uses NavigationZone’s stochastic exploration technology, generates hypertextual trails relevant to the user query as opposed to the standard results page given by conventional tools.

Trail-based information seeking provides users with the context that is missing from conventional document-centred search engines, taking into account the relationships between relevant results.

This enables development teams to increase their productivity by cutting down the time spent on consultation with printed or online references. Following trails over class hierarchies and interfaces provides new developers with a smooth introduction to the language constructs, and enables more experienced programmers to expand their knowledge with related information.
Initial release of AutoDoc, available at, offers rapid web-based search and navigation within SUN Microsystems Java™ SE 2 v1.4 documentation.
