ENTERASYS NETWORKS ENABLES ANYTIME ANYWHERE LEARNING (AAL) Thursday 17 January 2002 PDF Print Ninestiles School Standardises on an Enterasys LAN Solution for AAL Roll Out to 1,400 Students NEWBURY, ENGLAND þu January 16, 2002 ¨C Enterasys Networks Inc. (NYSE: ETS), a leader in enterprise networking solutions, announced that midlands-based Ninestiles School has selected an Enterasys high-availability LAN infrastructure solution to support its Anytime Anywhere Learning (AAL) program. Ninestiles School will implement AAL, a Microsoft connected learning initiative, by providing each of its 1,400 students and 95 teachers with laptops with wireless connectivity powered by Enterasys' RoamAbout R2 wireless access platform and X-Pedition multilayer switch routers. The Enterasys solution provides the school with flexible and secure mobile connectivity, providing students with the freedom to roam the campus while staying connected to information resources, regardless of their location within the school. Mike Crowston, ICT Development at Ninestiles School commented, "it was an essential pre-condition to identify a technology provider that could offer a solution to meet our specific AAL needs. Several factors led us to select Enterasys. Most notable was the inherent functionality within its technology such as Quality of Service (QoS), rate limiting and, most importantly, security capabilities." Through the use of IT in daily educational curriculums, pupils at Ninestiles gain opportunities to improve their motivation, their learning and their results. Enhanced learning productivity will also allow students to acquire vital IT skills that are rapidly becoming necessary pre-requisites within the worldwide job market. Seventy-five percent of Ninestile's year 8 and 9 students currently own their own wireless-connected laptops, purchased through an innovative rental program organised and subsidised by the school. "Although it's too early to measure tangible academic results, we are already beginning to see many significant benefits from the program. Utilisation of the equipment at home has led to more parental involvement, improved presentation of homework and projects, and increased teamwork and motivation in pupils across the age and ability range," commented Dexter Hutt, head teacher at Ninestiles School. "We have wholeheartedly moved from learning how to use technology to utilising technology to learn." The supporting Enterasys infrastructure includes 38 RoamAbout R2 Access Points on campus, as well as RoamAbout PC cards housed within each laptop computer. The wireless solution delivers enhanced network intelligence and the ability to expand to higher rate standards and advanced functionality. The RoamAbout R2 seamlessly extends connectivity, enabling improved learning opportunities for students. As Ninestiles School's AAL activities develop, Enterasys¡¯ solution will have the ability to support the delivery of video streaming directly to student desktops. Each Access Point connects to an X-Pedition 8000, Enterasys' award-winning switch router, for unparalleled network availability. The solution was selected and implemented in association with TCPIP LTD, a UK technology consultancy retained by Ninestiles School. "Enterasys is delighted to be able to deliver leading-edge networking solutions to Ninestiles School. The combination of computer and network communications technology in the classroom is now having a huge impact on education. It's paving the way for new teaching and learning methods that have the potential to revolutionise our schools and universities, enabling them to become more productive and more pupil-centered than ever before and to provide the skills needed to succeed in tomorrow's work environment." added Stefan Michal, vice president for Enterasys UK & Ireland.
