HOME MEDIA NETWORKS ANNOUNCES TEN FOLD
Version 1.5 Of ShowShifter Personal Entertainment Manager Allows Over 30 Hours Of Storage On An Average PC
January 28 2002 – Home Media Networks Ltd, developer of personal entertainment manager software that allows the user to watch, record and time shift (pause) TV, play DVD videos and listen to MP3 music files all through one interface, today announced that the latest version of its popular ShowShifter offers ten fold increased video compression, the ability to play Audio CDs, and experience enhanced picture quality.
The enhanced compression support saves the video file in Microsoft’s ever-popular Windows Media Video (WMV) format in real time. The result for consumers is that a 30 minutes programme will now take up less than 300Mb of space, whereas previously it would have been closer to 3Gb. With the current trend for PCs and laptops to have a 20Gb hard drive, consumers will be able to hold in excess of 15 full-length feature films, or 60 half hour episodes on their PCs.
“We wanted to take the core experience that consumers are enjoying with ShowShifter and make it even better,” explained Home Media Networks Chief Technology Office, Colin Tinto. “The most obvious way of doing this was to continue to update our compression capabilities as more technology becomes available, especially with the launch of Windows XP.”
The picture quality is crisper thanks to support to Windows Media Deinterlace and Inverse Telecine, both part of Windows XP, and the sound quality has been improved through the ability to configure Windows media audio options.
Additional recompression features allow large MJPEG files to be recompressed into compact WMV files, conversion of SSF files to AVI and the ability for older, lower spec machines to use high quality compression techniques.
ShowShifter is a pioneering software application that merges broadcast video, digital stored video, DVD video, audio CD and MP3 music into a seamless application that can be controlled from a remote control. Through its Time Shifting technology, users can ‘pause’ live TV and then subsequently resume from where they left off. The TV signal is recorded in real time on the PC hard disk and then can be played back to the user from where they left off while the current live TV is still being recorded.
Other inclusions in ShowShifter V 1.5 include an Audio CD player mode (in addition to the current MP3 player), stereo audio controls to choose which language to watch broadcasts in and viewing image controls to select which colourspace and resolution to use for viewing.
“It is another step forward for Home Media Networks and confirms our commitment to offering consumers the best in personal entertainment management in line with the rapid progression of higher PC specification,” added Home Media Networks CEO, John Croft.
