Appian Communications Announces European Headquarters and Appoints New Vice President of EMEA

EquIP Technology Named Appian’s First Channel Partner in the UK

Appian Communications, the first to enable delivery of carrier-class Ethernet-over-SDH/SONET services, today announced the opening of its European headquarters at Reading in the UK with the appointment of Mark D. Weeks as its Vice President of EMEA. The new office will provide sales and technical support to established and emerging service providers preparing to migrate from traditional private line voice and data services to next-generation Ethernet services that are flexible, scalable and lower cost.

Extending its reach in the UK market, Appian also announced today that it has entered into a strategic partnership with innovative channel solutions provider EquIP Technology Limited. Recognised as one of the UK’s top network integrators for 2001, EquIP provides a broad portfolio of carrier-class Internet access offerings to leading-edge telecommunications companies and Value Added Resellers (VARs).

“In this competitive market, service providers are looking for evolutionary solutions like the OSAP that allow them to rapidly create new revenue-producing services that leverage their existing infrastructure,” said Ian Morris, co-founder and director at EquIP Technology. “We are already seeing strong interest in the Appian solution, and have recently commenced testing the OSAP’s service offerings at a significant client based in the UK.”

“Carriers throughout Europe are recognising Ethernet as the most effective way to increase revenues whilst lowering the cost of ownership in delivering new data services,” comments Weeks. “Appian enables them to offer a rich suite of Ethernet services that can scale from 1 Mbps to 1 Gbps with carrier-class resilience and manageability. Unlike other technologies which require providers to invest in an entirely new network and administrative infrastructure, Appian enables the migration to new, packet-efficient Ethernet services that fully leverage the deployed fibre, transport and back office systems of an existing SDH/SONET network.”

Mark Weeks brings over 17 years of experience in building strong sales and channel programs in the EMEA region to his new position with Appian. In his new role, Mark Weeks will be responsible for building Appian’s EMEA sales and support team, establishing key partnerships, and expanding the company’s presence throughout the region. As Networking Sales Director for Intel Corporation (UK) Ltd., he managed the European sales and support operation responsible for direct dial, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and networking solutions. Before this, as Vice President of EMEA for Shiva Europe Limited, Weeks was a key player in developing market share that subsequently lead to the Intel buyout. Prior to joining Shiva, Weeks managed and directed telecommunications sales in the UK for Cisco Systems EMEA, formerly known as StrataCom Ltd, where he supported British Telecom and its joint ventures throughout Europe.

“The market for Ethernet services is clearly taking off in the EMEA region, as it is around the world ” said Mick Scully, co-founder and CEO of Appian. Carriers are ready to turn recent metro area fibre investments into increased revenue by deploying next-generation services such as Ethernet Private Lines, scalable Internet access and Transparent LAN services. “We are very pleased to have Mark, with his extensive experience in building successful organisations in EMEA, lead Appian’s expansion into this important market.”

Appian’s OSAP Enables High Growth, Next-Generation Services

Data services have long been constrained by metro area networks that were initially designed to deliver voice services. Currently, bandwidth is delivered in large, fixed increments with long service lead times that are dictated by a manual installation process. Ethernet changes this model by enabling next-generation data services that scale from 1 Mbps to 1 Gbps, with software-based provisioning that is more rapid for the customer and lower cost to the carrier. Key to the business model is the ability to leverage installed fibre, existing transport and established provisioning, billing and service management resources.

Appian’s OSAP has been purpose-built to enable this migration, providing a solution that combines Ethernet, a standards-based technology that is widely deployed and well understood, with the stability of existing SDH/SONET networks. With the OSAP, carriers can now achieve new service revenues with much lower cost of ownership by leveraging existing resources to deliver premium revenue services such as Ethernet Private Line, as well as Ethernet-based Internet/ATM/frame relay access, to both retail and wholesale customers.

About Appian Communications

Appian is removing the final metro area bottleneck to new optical service revenues. Designed to enable growth in service revenue and profitability, the Appian solution combines the low cost and simplicity of Ethernet with the resilience and scale of established SDH/SONET networks to enable carrier-class Ethernet services that include secure Ethernet Private Lines, explicit rate Virtual Private Lines, and burstable Internet Access. With its integrated TDM service support, the Optical Services Activation Platform™ (OSAP™) is a best-of-breed solution that simplifies the migration from today’s rigid, circuit-optimised voice and private line offerings to these next-generation service offers. Recognised as a 2001 Hot 100 Private Company by UPSIDE Magazine, Appian is marketing its products to emerging and existing providers, including NTT Communications, around the world.
