TEAMWARE IMPLEMENTS WORLDS FIRST VIRTUAL CITY COMMUNITY PORTAL Tuesday 12 February 2002 PDF Print Teamware Group today announced that it has been selected as the sole supplier of web services to the Arabianranta area in Helsinki, Finland. The interactive city portal, to be launched during spring 2002, will bring together web-based services for businesses, citizens and students of the area. The portal is a major step towards the completion of the Helsinki Virtual Village project. Helsinki Virtual Village is a public-private initiative, established to develop the Arabianranta area into a virtual community providing it with integrated services and technology. It aims to enable those living, working and studying in the area to interact with each other within traditional village community ethos. “Through the portal built by Teamware, interactive web services will be available for the members of the Arabianranta community from home or from work. Residents can participate in local decision-making building commitment to the local community. At the same time the leading “hub” of design and media industries will receive a tool to help match the demand and supply of different services within the area,” says Kari Raina, Managing Director at Art and Design City Helsinki Ltd., the company responsible for the development of the Arabianranta area. “Helsinki Virtual Village is a initiative, where we can bring added value with our technical and experience-based web community know-how”, states Rauno Toivonen, CEO and President of Teamware Group. “It is an honor to participate in building the world’s first virtual city community, the development of which is being followed with great interest all around the world.” The web solution built using Teamware Pl@za® technology will consist of public services open to all while registration only services can be accessed by the members of the community and can be tailored according to the user group in question. On the web the visitors to the Helsinki Virtual Village portal can follow the progress of constructions in the area, read and engage in debating topical issues, register for local events, apply for work or employees and look for information on local businesses, as well as buying products and services. During the first phase the main emphasis is placed on serving the needs of the companies - most of which are focusing on design and media - and operating in the area. These companies are offered an opportunity to demonstrate their services and products on the web as well as market and sell them at the e-marketplace of the area. “Our goal is to support the Arabianranta image as the leading centre of the design industry and create 8,000 new jobs in the area over the next few years. We want to provide the companies with the best possible facilities for leading a successful business here,” Raina emphasises. The next stage of development will see the development of web services according to the needs and requirements of the Arabianranta citizens and students. In about ten years, when the area’s construction is finished the community will include 9,000 employees, 12,000 residents and 6,000 students. Eventually a broadband network will be provided as part of the district’s infrastructure for all the companies, educational institutions and citizens in the area. Art and Design City Helsinki Ltd. is the development company of the Arabianranta area that co-ordinates different projects within business, educational and residential sectors.
