- Adax and Hughes announce collaboration at 3GSM to reduce telcos' time to market

Cannes, France - 19 February 2002 - Two of the leading telecoms infrastructure companies, Adax and Hughes Software Systems (HSS) announced a collaboration at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes today, to produce an integrated signaling solution for 3G networks. HSS' RANAP (Radio Access Network Application Part), Iu (IuCS and IuPS) interface integrated value added software solutions have been integrated with Adax' newly-introduced ATM plus boards, SSCOP/SSCF and SCTP/T software to deliver significantly reduced development time for 3G core network and RNC nodes.

As part of the on-going alliance between Adax, HSS and Sun Microsystems, Inc., the new signaling solution is being demonstrated on Sun Servers running the robust Solaris (TM) Operating Environment at 3GSM.

These critical network nodes, including SGSNs, MSCs and RNCs, enable 3G's high-speed mobile data transfer. The availability of a pre-integrated signaling stack, protocol controllers and network interface will allow network equipment providers (NEPs) and operators to install the latest signaling technology in these nodes to tackle the complexities of 3G, significantly reducing time to market for service deployment.

HSS' unique, distributed and highly scalable Iu interface solution is offered as an integration of standards-based RANAP (CS and PS), SCCP (Signaling Connection Control Part), implemented over either SIGTRAN (for IP network nodes) or Broadband SS7 (ATM transport).

Field trials of the integrated and highly scalable solution are already underway with major NEPs and System Integrators. The trials have shown the solution provides highly efficient signaling handling, with over 4000 transactions per second consuming less than half of the host CPU resources, whilst maintaining 99%+ line utilisation. The integrated nature of the Adax and HSS RANAP and IuPS/ IuCS solutions are providing NEPs with a major time to market advantage by significantly reducing their development timescales.

In addition to this Adax, and HSS are participating in Sun's Netra High Availability Suite 2.0 Beta programme, designed for applications that demand ultra-high reliability. The Netra High Availability Suite offers software redundancy "out of the box," helping network equipment providers build telecom server platforms with virtually no single point of failure. The software can be used to create a highly available, dynamically scalable cluster of distributed nodes, or augment existing HA frameworks.

"The partnership between Adax and Hughes provides a rounded 3G broadband signaling infrastructure for application developers, which can crucially lower time to market for revenue-generating applications," explained Robin Kent, Director of European operations at Adax. "The latest integration will allow operators to deploy ready-made signaling stacks, reducing roll-out timescales for 3G."

"The availability of our market-leading software on Adax' latest ATM hardware will offer significant benefits to OEM's, in terms of cost and time savings," said Manoranjan Mohapatra, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Hughes Software Systems.

In Europe, operators are readying the market for the introduction of 3G for consumers in 2003. These operators are evaluating Adax/HSS 3G solutions for development and operations testing in mid-2002.

Technical summary

Iu- The Iu is offered as an integration of standards-based RANAP (CS and PS), SCCP (Signaling Connection Control Part), implemented over either SIGTRAN (for IP network nodes) or Broadband SS7 (ATM transport)

IuPS - The HSS IuPS interface provides connection between the SGSN and the RNC network nodes in UMTS/3G networks for carrying packet data.

IuCS - Provides interconnection between the MSC/VLR and RNC network nodes in UMTS/ 3G networks for carrying circuit switched data.

RANAP (Radio Access Network Application Part)- The radio network layer signaling protocol for Iu interface. It handles signaling between the RNC and 3G SGSN on the IuPS interface.

ATM plus - The Adax ATM plus is a high performance ATM controller with Ethernet capabilities. The

ATM-OC3, STM-1/STS-3C solution serves as the Gateway interface to wireless networks and VPNs over AAL5 and IP, whilst the built-in routing controller eliminates the need for an external switch to separate signaling from content traffic.
