ID Data plc, the UK’s largest supplier of secure transaction systems and smartcard services, and OneEighty Software jointly announce the JupiterCardTM, the first card to have both a real JavaTM virtual machine and full GSM functionality.

This card, which makes use of OneEighty’s ORIGIN and ORIGIN-J technologies represents a unique advance in the deployment of GSM coupled with the power and flexibility of the true JavaTM language as opposed to Java CardTM. It will also offer support for most of the likely requirements of emerging 3G systems including the ability to run simultaneous applications and dynamic download of data together with full memory management applications.

JupiterCardTM offers GSM network operators much greater flexibility in the creation and deployment of applications to differentiate themselves from one another. ORIGIN-J’s multi-threading capability will allow Network Operators to deliver multiple applications running simultaneously on the card. The ability to develop within standard environments will provide the operator with greater choice and variety of applications and of applications developers. The ability to develop is only constrained by the imagination of the operators.

JupiterCardTM will form the basis of a family of cards designed to realise the full potential that the companies’ technologies offer for the future development of personal mobile devices of all types. Sample quantities of JupiterCardTM will be available late Q1 2002.

ORIGIN-J is a JavaTM virtual machine (JVMTM), which enables the Java programming language to be implemented in memory constrained embedded systems such as smartcards, control systems and portable devices. Existing JVMs are too large to be effectively used on such devices, however ORIGIN-J overcomes this by reducing the JVM down to a very small memory footprint.
