ID Data plc, the UK’s largest supplier of secure transaction systems and smartcard services, and OneEighty Software jointly announce the JupiterCardTM, the first card to have both a real JavaTM virtual machine and full GSM functionality.
This card, which makes use of OneEighty’s ORIGIN and ORIGIN-J technologies represents a unique advance in the deployment of GSM coupled with the power and flexibility of the true JavaTM language as opposed to Java CardTM. It will also offer support for most of the likely requirements of emerging 3G systems including the ability to run simultaneous applications and dynamic download of data together with full memory management applications.
JupiterCardTM offers GSM network operators much greater flexibility in the creation and deployment of applications to differentiate themselves from one another. ORIGIN-J’s multi-threading capability will allow Network Operators to deliver multiple applications running simultaneously on the card. The ability to develop within standard environments will provide the operator with greater choice and variety of applications and of applications developers. The ability to develop is only constrained by the imagination of the operators.
JupiterCardTM will form the basis of a family of cards designed to realise the full potential that the companies’ technologies offer for the future development of personal mobile devices of all types. Sample quantities of JupiterCardTM will be available late Q1 2002.
Dr. Peter Dzwig, CEO of OneEighty Software said, “Both ID Data and OneEighty believe that the way forward to realising the potential for telcos lies in deploying the power of JavaTM alongside the global reach of GSM. We believe that JupiterCardTM is the start of a revolution in applications deployment.”
Peter Cox, CEO of ID Data said, “The new development represents the way forward for GSM operators to realise the potential of 3G and other emerging technologies, plus control their own destiny.”

Note to Editors:
ID Data plc:
ID Data plc is the UK’s largest supplier of secure transaction systems and smart card to the international telephony, banking, retail and secure access sectors. The Company strategy has moved from commodity products into value-added services and solutions, which has created a solid platform on which to build further growth. Clients include BT, C & W, Vodafone, Barclays Bank, Tesco, and Exxon Mobil. ID Data has formed agreements with major global corporations to ensure rapid market development as shown by their partnerships with Toshiba & Toppan and Total Systems Inc. of the United States of America. ID Data has now delivered in excess of 60 million chip cards for the telephony sector. The Company was founded in 1988, and was listed on the AIM in October 2000.
OneEighty Software Ltd:
OneEighty was founded in 1989 and has developed a unique architecture, which enables ultra compact coding.
ORIGIN-J is a JavaTM virtual machine (JVMTM), which enables the Java programming language to be implemented in memory constrained embedded systems such as smartcards, control systems and portable devices. Existing JVMs are too large to be effectively used on such devices, however ORIGIN-J overcomes this by reducing the JVM down to a very small memory footprint.
OneEighty’s ORIGIN-J platform is designed to deliver ultra-compact embedded systems from smart cards to PDAs as well as brown and white goods.
JavaTM and related trademarks are registered to Sun Microsystems
