NSB boosts duty free in Ireland Wednesday 27 February 2002 PDF Print Aer Rianta installs NSB’s ObjectPOS at Ireland’s three main airports Reading, February, 2002: Ireland’s principal airport operator, Aer Rianta, which owns and operates Dublin, Shannon and Cork airports, has installed NSB’s ObjectPOS across its duty free retail outlets. The new system, which will handle a total of 85 till points across the three airports, replaces the existing locally-provided software solution, which would be unable to handle Aer Rianta’s growing retail business. In 2000, Aer Rianta processed more than 18 million business and tourist passengers, both international and domestic. It was therefore important that, as well as being fully Euro-compliant, the new system could handle multiple currencies and accommodate both duty free and non-duty free pricing, in view of the fact that only non-EC travellers are now eligible for duty-free purchases. “One of the key reasons for choosing ObjectPOS was its excellent promotions capabilities, which allow us to increase sales by facilitating targeted promotions and also give us the ability to present cross-product offers.” comments Brian Drain, Retail Systems Development Manager at Aer Rianta. “These promotions can be targeted to coincide with particular events, for instance a special offer on Irish products around St. Patrick's day. ObjectPOS has also ensured that the transition to the Euro has been extremely smooth.” ObjectPOS went live at Cork airport on 8th August, with Dublin following on 28th August and Shannon on 1st October. The new point-of-sale system integrates with Aer Rianta’s SAP merchandising solution, which came on stream at the same time. About Aer Rianta Aer Rianta is a state company, which first began operations in 1937. Its original task was to "operate lines of aerial conveyances directly or by means of Aer Lingus Teoranta." It was also charged with the development of aviation in general. The name Aer Rianta was derived from the translation, "Air Ways" or "Air Tracks", from the Irish language. Since the 1980's Aer Rianta has broadened its commercial activities to include Retail. Aer Rianta owns, operates and develops Ireland's major airports at Dublin, Shannon and Cork. Perhaps the most significant event in the history of Aer Rianta came in 1947 when it opened the world's first duty free shop at Shannon airport.
