Lightscape Networks to unveil the industry’s first optical platform for wireless carriers, as well as an advanced tool for designing flexible, cost-effective optical networks

PETAH TIKVA, ISRAEL, March 12, 2002 - Lightscape Networks, an ECI Telecom company (ECI Telecom: NASDAQ:ECIL) and a leading innovator in optical networking, will showcase the latest technology releases within its comprehensive range of optical networking solutions for metropolitan area networks at CeBIT 2002.

This will include the debut of LightPlan™, an easy-to-use design package that enables telecommunications operators to plan optical, as well as data, networks far more accurately and efficiently than even the best traditional methods, resulting in complete network optimisation. Additionally, Lightscape Networks will introduce the XDM™-400, which incorporates all of the functionality of its market leading XDM optical platform into a small footprint device. XDM-400 is designed specifically for the wireless market to address the needs of cellular operators.

LightPlan™

LightPlan is a Windows-based program that simplifies the management and maximises the functionality of growing Synchronous Digital Hierarchy/Synchronous Optical Networking (SDH/SONET), Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical and data networks. It enables carriers to plan several alternative networks and sites using computer simulation. This ensures every network application meets real-world technical specifications, as well as optimising equipment, cost and other key factors, in order to achieve the most cost-effective and efficient transport solution.

The LightPlan software comprises three modules, for transmission, optical and site planning. These not only allow the user to plan hybrid SDH/SONET/DWDM and data networks or pure optical networks, but also individual sites using the same design package. This multipurpose planning tool utilises Lightscape Networks’ trademarked ‘single architecture’ approach in that it eliminates the need for individual software programmes to carry out each function. This means that operators can plan a single shelf or an entire network from the access layer through the metro and regional layers using one software package. This results in significant benefits in terms of cost savings, operation simplicity and faster response time.

Whilst LightPlan automates the often prohibitively time-consuming processes associated with planning efficient transmission networks, its customisable configuration parameters also enable operators to remain in control of their individual environment. For example, they can reserve network resources for future growth, choose from various protection strategies and levels of protection and enforce the system to accept or avoid specific routes in order to achieve the optimal solution for their particular set of circumstances. In addition, comprehensive Excel worksheets and graphical reporting allow them to clearly visualise the network.

XDM™-400

Lightscape Networks will also introduce another model in its flagship XDM next-generation, hybrid optical platform family. Based upon a single architecture, the XDM family expands modularly through simple card insertion to meet carriers’ networking needs from the metro-access layer to the metro-core. The new XDM-400 further extends the XDM family to make it the most flexible next generation platform in the marketplace. XDM-400 is geared towards providing versatile metro-access functionality within cellular networks, as well as a clear migration strategy for 2.5G and 3G services.

XDM-400’s small footprint and extended temperature range means that it is ideal for deployment within the metro-edge, cellular radio link hubs, integrated networks and within indoor or outdoor enclosures. The XDM-400 combines multi-service support to meet all requirements demanded by customers today, integrating intelligent optical networking and SDH/SONET with sub-lambda grooming for optimal utilisation of network capacity and maximum efficiency. A wide range of available data-aware services and functionality enables carriers to migrate seamlessly and effortlessly to tomorrow’s data-centric networks as and when required.

Highly scalable through simple in-service card insertion, the XDM-400 accommodates low capacity network configurations right through to complex high capacity network infrastructures, with high switching capabilities, support for SDH, SONET, and Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) in ADM, multi-ADM, local cross-connect and OADM configurations. The shelf is designed to inherent datacom capabilities as well.

“The XDM is proving popular with carriers seeking a solution that provides immediate bandwidth improvements for SDH/SONET and optical networks whilst offering a relatively simple migration path to the pure IP network of tomorrow, said Ido Gur, vice president of marketing at Lightscape Networks. ”The XDM is also being adopted by a growing number of cellular operators because it offers a fast, cost effective migration path to 2.5 and 3G services. This custom-designed platform will truly allow them to take immediate advantage of next-generation technology and to begin to generate additional revenue from broadband services as quickly as possible.”
