DALLAS--(SourceWire)--March 12, 2002--Bynari's InsightConnector allows Microsoft(R) Outlook users to uncouple their dependence on Microsoft Exchange.
To test it, a user needs an IMAP server. Leave it to Open Source advocate, Bynari Inc. to provide interested parties with the environment they need.
"People think of us as the enterprise software firm in the glass house," says Tom Adelstein, Bynari Inc.'s CTO. "Most of our biggest opportunities arose because someone bought an Intel version of the server to just test our product. So, we're making that environment available for free.
"People unfamiliar with IMAP servers, Linux, Free Software, etc. don't know how to setup a test environment. Now, they can download a free server suite to test or use as they wish. We want to make finding an alternative to Exchange as easy as possible."
Bynari developed InsightConnector as a third-party plug-in for Outlook to allow organizations to deploy IMAP servers, which offer higher scalability, increased reliability, and lower costs of ownership while providing the same features on which Outlook users have come to rely.
Adelstein believes the coupling of Microsoft Outlook and Exchange closely resembles the commingling model analysts complain allows Microsoft to maintain an unfair competitive edge in other market areas. He points to ZDNet writer Joe Wilcox's recent quote, "In testimony before Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, former Judge Robert Bork contended that the (US Justice Department's proposed Settlement) failed to address one of the most important aspects of a June appeals court ruling that found Microsoft had violated U.S. antitrust law: the issue of commingling code. In its decision, the court found that Microsoft's commingling, or merging together, of the software code for Internet Explorer and Windows 98 constituted an anticompetitive act."
"We believe market forces can in themselves challenge the difficult competition presented by companies with seemingly unchallengeable market share," says Adelstein. "InsightConnector represents what software companies can do themselves to level the playing field."
"We never considered waiting around for the courts to make life easier for us," Adelstein says. "We're presenting a most viable alternative providing better performance and features than the existing solution. Also, InsightConnector unifies the various versions of Outlook and provides a choice for companies that don't want to upgrade to Exchange 2000 and Active Directory Services. In addition our solution provides a 70% savings to those wanting to forgo the NT5 model."
Bynari also announced that its Linux and Solaris desktop messaging and collaboration solution, InsightClient will see a new release within two weeks. The Company says that Bynari's entry provides interoperability with Microsoft Outlook including server-side calendar sharing, meeting management, shared folders and the ability to interpret Outlook's protocols.
