“BIC has implemented the eRoom digital workplace as one of the cornerstone applications of our global intranet, Maestro. As a result, BIC has been able to create a culture of collaboration that has transformed our business operations worldwide,” said John Augenstein, global intranet project manager for BIC International Co., which is part of the BIC Group, a leading manufacturer of stationery products, lighters and shavers with offices and production facilities located around the world. “The enhancements to the eRoom platform will enable us to bring our applications to the next level, contributing to the next phase of Maestro’s evolution.”

The advancements in eRoom Version 6.0 focus on three key areas: support for cross-enterprise business processes, additional digital workplace tools and enterprise extensibility. These advancements solidify the company’s leadership position in target industries, including professional services firms, high tech and other discrete manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, financial institutions and government agencies. The eRoom solution is used in these markets for a broad range of business applications such as client engagement management, product and service lifecycle management, supply chain collaboration and clinical trial design.

“As businesses change and markets contract, new focus is being placed on technologies that significantly improve critical business processes, especially those that stretch existing resources and drive down operating costs,” said Simon Hayward, VP and research director at Gartner. “The impact of improved collaboration goes well beyond a single project or workplace initiative by providing the glue that enables the creation of more effective work practices and processes across the enterprise and beyond.”

Business Process Integration

eRoom Version 6.0 delivers functionality that will optimize core business processes and applications, providing a powerful platform for driving forward complex projects and business initiatives. These include:

Business Process Applications. Application templates that take advantage of the new features in eRoom Version 6.0 to help customers rapidly deploy best practice processes and applications throughout their extended enterprise. Six templates are available. Some examples are:

· Biopharmaceuticals - Lead Generation and Optimization – Coordinates the activity of teams working on the drug discovery and development process; takes a lead from discovery through to phase I clinical trials

· Manufacturing - Demand Collaboration – Facilitates effective communication of demand signals to suppliers; communicates changes in demand and supply to reduce the amount of inventory buyers and suppliers need to hold

· Professional Services - Client Engagement – Supports the ongoing interaction and communication between clients and service providers from proposal to execution of services to project completion; workflow features to direct communication and resolve issues more quickly
Configurable Business Processes. Supports multi-step approval processes that simplify the end-to-end automation of business processes, such as proposal development, change order management or budget planning processes. Custom workflow APIs, supporting looped, branched and conditional operations, enable the design of more complex workflow processes into eRoom workplaces.

Additional Digital Workplace Tools

eRoom Version 6.0 extends the digital workplace toolset with productivity advancements that help fast-cycle teams simplify complex tasks and accelerate the completion of critical projects through enhanced collaboration. These include:

Multi-step Approval Processes. Allows end users to easily configure a multi-step approval process, greatly simplifying project management and accelerating decision-making activities for all team members. Participants have access to a full range of approval-related options, such as accept, reject or return for review capabilities, as well as the ability to track status information.

Real Time Collaborative Services. Enables team members to move dynamically between synchoronous and asynchronous collaboration within a single unified environment. New features in the real time eRoom collaborative environment include the ability to invite non-eRoom members, such as an outside consultant or a customer, to a real time meeting and the ability to improve the delivery of presentations in a real time meeting by automatically converting slide presentations into slide shows ahead of the meeting.

Server-based Viewers. Microsoft Project and CAD/CAM viewers enable team members to render and manipulate files on the server so that they can collaborate on schedules and designs without the client application.

Enterprise Services and Extensibility

To meet the needs of large strategic digital workplace deployments, eRoom Version 6.0 furthers the company’s commitment in the areas of scalability, reliability, extensibility and security. These new enhancements enable eRoom Version 6.0 to support large user populations, provide clustering, integrate with existing enterprise applications and create custom applications that automate business processes. These include:

Native Support for XML. Provides a powerful way of storing and retrieving eRoom data remotely, as well as a better way of exchanging objects between an eRoom digital workplace and other business applications.

Support for SOAP and WSDL. Enables application developers, value-added resellers and enterprise customers to deploy eRoom capabilities as a Web service, accessible from a program running on other .NET clients or servers.

Custom Commands and Synchronous Events. Supports the addition of custom commands to the eRoom user interface, simplifying the creation of application-specific tasks and custom business processes. Synchronous events allow for an external application to be run when a specific user action is performed, such as initiating a virus check when a file is added to an eRoom digital workplace.

Windows Clustering Services. Enables eRoom deployments with “high availability” by switching to a backup server in case of hardware failure.
