NMS Communications Sets New Industry Benchmark With Highest-Density Echo Cancellation Device for Carrier-Class Voice Enhancement Systems

Tiny, Feature-Rich "e256" Delivers Highest Voice Quality, Most Channels, Best Price/Performance; Service and Network Equipment Providers to Benefit

NMS Communications (NASDAQ: NMSS), the leading supplier of technology for tomorrow's networks, today announced immediate availability of the industry's most powerful echo cancellation device, the e256. The device will be part of NMS' voice enhancement booth demonstrations at CTIA Wireless in Orlando, FL this week.

The e256 delivers unmatched voice quality, the highest channel density (256 channels) and the lowest power consumption - adding up to superior performance for the price, and all in a footprint substantially smaller than a postage stamp. Ideally suited for use in network switching equipment and echo cancellation systems deployed in wireless, wireline and converged (voice over IP, voice over ATM) networks, the e256 chip technology represents the newest generation of echo cancellation innovations from NMS' Voice Enhancement Systems group, which has its roots in Bell Labs and was recently acquired from Lucent Technologies.

All wireless and long-distance wireline voice traffic, as well as most voice over IP (VoIP) traffic, passes through some type of echo cancellation or voice enhancement product. Without an assist from such equipment, echo, delays, and other conditions degrade the quality of voice calls. These systems also improve the performance of speech-enabled applications and services - such as voice-activated dialing, speech-enabled contact centers, and voice portal applications - that are designed to increase efficiency and user satisfaction while driving additional revenue for service providers. With over 10 million channels deployed by more than 100 carriers and wireless operators in central offices and mobile switching centers worldwide, NMS' voice enhancement solutions eliminate echo and network distortion.

The products deliver the industry-leading voice quality that helps service providers increase mobile usage, enhance customer loyalty, increase revenue, and reduce costs.

Answers the Imperative for Voice Quality

The e256 device addresses service providers' needs for outstanding voice quality, which requires particular attention when serving a growing volume of mobile phone calls. According to Tom Valovic, research manager, IP Telephony Program of International Data Corporation, "As the IP telephony industry matures, all of the core functions and characteristics of the traditional PSTN will need to be reinvented and mapped over to next-generation products and optimized for that environment. The area of voice quality represents a key area in this transition and an important new opportunity for vendors like NMS who are focusing on developing the requisite enabling technologies and systems for the service provider market."

The e256 underscores NMS' strategy to provide the world's best system building blocks as well as complete systems. Versions of NMS' voice enhancement systems that incorporate the e256 will be announced in the coming months. Additionally, the company will focus its design and customization expertise, and its extensive relationships with the world's top network equipment providers, to make the e256 available for use in their respective product offerings. This will further drive the adoption of NMS' echo cancellation technology throughout the industry.

"We developed the e256 to advance our suite of stand-alone echo cancellation systems and to dominate the integrated echo cancellation market for the long-term," said Clarke Ryan, senior vice president and general manager of NMS Communications' Voice Enhancement Systems group. "A tremendous value for service and equipment providers, the e256 delivers carrier-class performance and voice quality at eight times the density, while consuming much less power and real estate. This device represents a technological leap ahead of any competitive offering in the market today."

"NMS' e256 device addresses issues the equipment providers face by eliminating 'trade-offs' between functionality, density, real-estate, and power," said Mike Schoonover, worldwide ASIC marketing manager, Texas Instruments. "TI's copper-based 130 nanometer advanced process technology and GS40 ASIC libraries gives NMS an extremely integrated high-density design that maximizes performance, real estate, and power efficiency. The combination of NMS' algorithms and TI's technology provides customers with highly functional boards that feature unsurpassed carrier-class echo cancellation."
