Solution Sets Provide Network Security Assessment and Protection for Mid-Size to Large Enterprises

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 25, 2002: Cable & Wireless (NYSE: CWP) today introduced three new outsourced security solution sets for its Web hosting business, branded Exodus in the US. These new solutions, which augment Exodus' existing security services, help customers identify potential network security vulnerabilities, assess current levels of security, and manage security systems on an ongoing basis.

The reduction of corporate IT budgets and staff resources is driving a trend toward outsourcing. The December 2001 IDCFlash, "Web Hosting Companies Get Serious About Security" notes that staff reductions are impacting the focus and performance of corporate IT departments. The report concludes that the perceived value of outsourcing infrastructure security to a service provider is growing.

"To meet customer demand for increased confidentiality, integrity and privacy of their e-businesses, service providers are strengthening their portfolio of security services," said Allan Carey, senior research analyst of information security services at IDC. "Exodus' decision to bundle its essential services demonstrates the companys commitment to provide flexible outsourced security solutions."

The new security solution sets, available immediately, were developed to address the needs of mid-size to large enterprises that recognize their networks may be exposed or vulnerable to attacks, viruses, or worms, yet, because of staffing and budget constraints, lack the internal expertise and resources to implement and manage the network and Internet security systems they need.

Exodus is offering three new security solutions:

- The Essential Security Audit provides a time- and cost-effective means of evaluating existing security, and a starting point for developing and implementing a comprehensive network security system. This solution is aimed at companies that know network security is critical, yet lack the in-house staff and expertise to assess their needs as well as companies who require expert validation that their existing system meets complex US security regulations such as HIPAA, and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.

- The Enhanced Security solution includes the Essential Security Audit as well as comprehensive network security implemented and supported by an experienced team of security professionals from Exodus with a single point of contact.

- The Enterprise Security solution combines the services of the Essential Security Audit and the Enhanced Security solution and adds integrated incident response, managed intrusion detection and content integrity monitoring services for enterprises that have an established IT security system and budget but need to ensure compliance with security regulations.

Each solution includes the Exodus vulnerability scanning service. Over the past few months, Exodus, which provides managed security services to a number of global enterprises, has seen an increase in customers asking for vulnerability scanning to identify and strengthen potential areas of weakness in their network and Internet security, according to Charles Neal, vice president, managed security services for Exodus.

"Traditionally it takes noteworthy public or private events for decision makers to reevaluate the consequences of security failures on people and organizational viability," said Neal, a 20-year FBI veteran. "Informed managers know their environment changes frequently and regular external vulnerability scanning prevents security reviews from being driven by news or costly failures."

The heightened awareness around network and online security corresponds with statistics released early this year by the Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center (CERT/CC)1. Those statistics show that cyber security incidents have increased dramatically over the last decade, and seen a 100 percent increase, from 21,756 incidents in 2000 to 52,658 in 2001. Cyber threats are also increasingly sophisticated, requiring more complex solutions around intrusion detection and response.
