26 March 2002. E-performance specialist ActualIT has extended its range of services to include the unique peerReview end-to-end web performance measurement service from Porivo.

"We've added peerReview to complement our existing range of measurement solutions," said David Hudson, managing director of ActualIT. "There are occasions when we need to take a fine-grained approach to performance measurement and report exactly how users experience web sites on a global basis. It complements our existing services and gives a vital extra dimension to our capabilities."

peerReview collects performance metrics from the end-points of the Internet - from the PCs of actual users who have joined the worldwide testing network now being used by ActualIT. As a result, peerReview reflects how end users actually experience web performance. Its measurements are especially revealing because they take account of "last mile" Internet connections, including dial-up modem access.

With peerReview, ActualIT can now advise clients exactly where performance problems occur throughout the data path from server to user. Metrics include ISP and backbone detection, DNS lookup time, connection time, redirect time, first byte, base page and content download times, total bytes, bytes/second and reports of any errors in transmission.

Positive results from initial projects

ActualIT recently used the peerReview service for determining the impact of its new jetNEXUS web compression software, installed on servers at, the UK's no.1 web site where couples plan their weddings and special occasions.

"Some web performance services can't pick up the compression difference because they still run agents on HTTP 1.0, but peerReview can," explained Karl Havard, sales director at ActualIT. "In this instance it was very useful to us, because we were able to measure site performance both before and after installing the jetNEXUS acceleration software."

peerReview helped ActualIT prove that would reduce bandwidth costs by around fifty percent each year and significantly increase download speed by installing jetNEXUS on all its servers.

Advanced features

Among peerReview's advanced features is a facility for viewing test results by specific ISPs and backbone providers, with full details on network latencies. Its reporting interface enables the customer to design and submit tests, drill down into the data, and view results - all in real time.

Using test transaction scripts and the peerReview service, ActualIT's consultants can represent entire user sequences, including login, search, and purchasing transactions, to test an entire e-business infrastructure under the most realistic conditions.
