Enterasys High-Availability Switching Solution Delivers Fully Managed Computing Services To 4,000 Students and Staff

NEWBURY, ENGLAND & DUBLIN, IRELAND -- April 3, 2002 – Enterasys Networks Inc. (NYSE: ETS), a leader in enterprise networking solutions, and its partner Compaq, today announced that Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT), one of the largest IT universities in Ireland, has standardised on Enterasys’ range of multilayer switches, including its next-generation Matrix E7 and Vertical Horizon families, for its LAN infrastructure upgrade. The new high-speed, fully managed communications platform provides more than 4,000 students and staff with fast, reliable connectivity, Internet access and seamless support for the planned introduction of new e-learning services.

The network is critical to the smooth operation of the Institute, which offers courses across a wide range of disciplines including two new degree courses in Internet Technologies and IT Management. DKIT also serves as an interface with local industry, providing expertise and facilities to the wider business community. James McCahill, IT Manager, for DKIT explains the rationale behind the network upgrade. “The LAN was originally based on ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), but we were concerned with its ability to support new users, handle the rollout of new e-learning services and accommodate enhanced multimedia applications.”

The decision was taken to migrate to a new Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbps) infrastructure. James McCahill cites “favorable cost of ownership in terms of scalability, manageability and administration,” as the main drivers behind the choice.

The solution encompasses two Enterasys Matrix E7™ chassis at the core, trunked and triangulated to provide full resiliency. With no single point of failure, the unique distributed switching architecture ensures maximum network uptime, while inherent Quality-of-Service (QoS) and traffic prioritisation capabilities guarantee delivery of critical applications. Enterasys’ Vertical HorizonTM workgroup switches provide connectivity between the network core and the edge and Netsight™ provides powerful network management capabilities.

“In continuing to strive for academic excellence, educational institutions are leveraging technology to implement e-learning strategies. The deployment of these solutions can attract and retain students and increase revenue opportunities, but its success has to start with the infrastructure,” said Andy Foster, vice president of UK & Ireland, Enterasys Networks. “DKIT is driving forward the use of technology. Enterasys’ high-availability networking solution ensures network access for both students and staff and in turn, ensures the institution’s future in this highly competitive market.”
