Lack of management awareness is the biggest hindrance to effectively implementing configuration management in major IT development projects. This was the response given by one third of respondents in a survey of 58 UK IT professionals at a Configuration Management (CM) Solutions Conference, 19 March 2002, hosted by TesCom, Mercury Interactive and Merant PVCS.
Configuration management is generally treated as a ‘background’ issue; 64 percent of respondents do not regularly discuss CM issues, even though the same percentage felt they do not have enough training on the tools; a quarter have practically no guidelines regarding the use of CM; but 97 percent report that they will or might extend their CM approach to other parts of IT development.
Sixty-four percent of respondents claim that they have an off-the-shelf configuration management tool that is currently in use. However, only 36 percent believe they have adequate training on the tools.
Application testing suffers a similar lack of management focus. One in four respondents claim to have
practically no departmental or corporate guidelines regarding the use of configuration management. One in three have no guidelines for testing in-house applications.
The results underline the communication issues that were highlighted in a previous survey conducted by Continental Research for TesCom. This survey showed that business managers were almost uniformly unaware of what resources are required to build reliable, well tested IT applications.
