Dimension Data Holdings plc (LSE: DDT), a leading global technology services company, which specialises in providing and managing collaborative infrastructure solutions to global corporations, announces today that it has completed a £750,000 contract to provide internet connectivity to in excess of 50 education sites across Jersey. The project, which will enable unprecedented learning opportunities for the whole community, is part of a much broader initiative that aims to make Jersey one of the world leaders in education technology integration.
Dimension Data is delivering a turnkey contract that includes the design, procurement and roll-out of a wide area network to all schools in Jersey. Work on the project commenced in April 2001 and has standardised and streamlined previously disparate arrangements between individual schools and their ISPs, ensuring all schools now have IP networks with ISDN lines for back-up, thereby providing bandwidth-on-demand.
Security was cited as an important element to the project and Dimension Data’s team of internet security consultants has been responsible for implementing and overseeing an ongoing centrally controlled security initiative that has helped allay parental concerns over pupils accessing inappropriate material.
Commenting on the initiative, the States of Jersey’s Education Service’s ICT manager, Romy Kerschbaumer, said: “We want all students to have equal access to ICT in order to enhance their skills and prepare them for the Information Society. This project supports a multimedia education programme along with collaborative student learning. The quality of the learning resource that we are unleashing will help to improve teaching and learning skills. The objective here is simply to put Jersey first, by creating more effective and skilled Islanders.”
Dimension Data will continue to provide operational and support services (Primer and Uptime) to the States of Jersey to ensure that all schools have access to the network 24 hours a day. Its online network management service (Insite) will provide ongoing monitoring of the infrastructure. All services will be provided on Dimension Data’s Global Services Operating Architecture (GSOA), thereby ensuring consistency and transparency.
