Cable & Wireless, the global telecommunications group, today (11 April 2002) announced that Travelex has appointed Cable & Wireless as preferred supplier of telecommunications services for its centralised International Call Centre operation, in a drive to reduce costs and improve service quality.

Cable & Wireless has ported over 1000 international toll free numbers for Travelex, from several suppliers, with no disruption to service. By consolidating disparate suppliers and benefiting from Cable & Wireless' intelligent network platform, Travelex will see extensive cost savings of up to 50 per cent on its International Freecall services and 40 per cent on PSTN charges.

Following the acquisition of Thomas Cook Global & Financial Services in 2001, Travelex offers a diverse range of currency exchange and payment services and outsourced travel assistance programmes from its central UK site at Worldwide House in Peterborough. The call centre, twice winner of European Call Centre of the Year, handles an average of 10,000 calls every day from all parts of the world in 20 different languages. Travelex sought a preferred telecommunications supplier who could offer global reach and guaranteed quality of service to support its extensive operations, as well as significant cost savings.

As well as International Freecall services, Cable & Wireless also now provides Travelex with a portfolio of national call services, including direct and non-direct access, Freecall and Nationalcall.

"As we use so many numbers, we have unique telephony requirements. Cable & Wireless was the only single supplier willing to commit to such a large-scale porting," said Rob Sykes, Head of Telecommunications at Travelex. "We have been impressed by the speed and efficiency with which Cable & Wireless has completed the operation, and how they have been able to meet our requirement for quality service and cost savings with such a competitive package."

"This operation has shown our real expertise in meeting large-scale global communication requirements on time and cost effectively," said Gareth James, Cable & Wireless president, European sales and marketing. "We look forward to a long and developing relationship with Travelex."
