Specialist semiconductor distributor Silica has announced the introduction of Infineon's latest 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit microcontrollers. Silica, part of the Avnet Electronics Marketing group, will provide comprehensive design-in support for the new Infineon products, which target a wide range of industrial, automotive and consumer applications.

The new generation of Infineon microcontrollers now available from Silica include the 16-bit XC161 and XC164 microcontrollers. Both combine an enhanced C166S-V2 core with the flexibility and efficiency of embedded Flash memory. Outperforming conventional 16-bit microcontrollers, these devices are fully compatible with standard C166 architecture and offer an impressive set of peripherals. In addition to 128 Kbytes of Flash memory, these include an advanced MAC unit that supports significant DSP performance, a flexible and intelligent PWM unit that simplifies a host of motor control applications and a TwinCAN module that provides the optimum solution for network system designs. Extended temperature range (-40:C to +125:C) variants are available and the devices are offered in a compact P-TQFP-100 package.

Key benefits of Infineon's new, low cost, C868 8-bit microcontroller include powerful on-board PWM capability and the potential for much faster development cycles. Combining a standard C8051-compatible core with a highly integrated set of peripherals, the devices feature an instruction cycle time of 300ns at a clock rate of 40MHz and the option of on-chip SRAM, as well as a monitor for evaluation and debugging.

Infineon's new 32-bit microcontroller, the TC1765, is designed for use in embedded industrial and automotive applications such as three-phase motor and robotic control, engine management and transmission control. Based on the company's advanced TriCore unified processor, this new addition to the AUDO family combines microcontroller, DSP and RISC processor units in a single, system-on-chip implementation. The rich peripheral set includes features such as a TwinCAN module, a General Purpose Timer Array and two ADC units.

Commenting on the launch of the new devices, Bernard Friry, VP Technical Marketing for Silica, said: "These innovative components once again position Infineon at the forefront of the microcontroller market. In particular, the embedded Flash 16-bit parts are extremely design-friendly. When combined with the board-level technical support that Silica can provide, customers can expect to see significant reductions in the time and cost of system development."

Recognising that fast, efficient time-to-market is now critical to commercial success, Silica has created a comprehensive portfolio of technical support services for the Infineon microcontroller portfolio. These include a readily accessible team of Infineon-trained field application engineers and seamless links to on-line technical support via the Silica website. A number of starter kits and development tools for the new parts are also due for release in the near future, further enhancing the development environment.
