Hyperion Announces Business Performance Management Suite

EGHAM, UK, April 22, 2002 – High-performing companies are increasingly attributing their success to total business visibility and the ability to quickly respond to changing environments. Many of these top-performing companies are relying on an emerging category of software called business performance management to help them manage dynamic change and to align objectives, strategies and tactics across extended enterprises, according to Hyperion (Nasdaq: HYSL).

Hyperion made the announcement today at its Solutions 2002 user conference in Orlando, Florida, believed to be the largest single gathering of business performance management users and experts in the world.

Hyperion, an enterprise software company known for pioneering best-in-class financial applications, online analytical processing technology and other innovations that are precursors to business performance management, is helping shape and define the category. Hyperion’s point of view is informed by its experience with the more than 6,000 customers worldwide that rely on the company’s software to measure performance and drive profitability.

“Our customers are looking for ways to measure performance, to continuously drive growth and profitability and to anticipate where their business is going,” said Jeff Rodek, chairman and CEO of Hyperion. “Business performance management is built on integrating technology that is helping companies gain visibility into their operations and to better manage those operations. The beauty is that it applies process and intelligence to the data derived from operations to give visibility into the drivers that effect profitability. As a result companies are better able to align plans and strategy, establish accountability and gain an integral understanding of their total business performance in order to drive execution and results.”

Hyperion Introduces Its Business Performance Management Suite

At the Solutions 2002 conference, Hyperion announced its Business Performance Management Suite, a comprehensive solution for managing performance and driving profitability across the enterprise. It is the foundation of Hyperion’s product strategy to help companies measure performance, drive profitability and increase competitive advantage. Financial Performance Management and Organizational Performance Management are the first families of packaged and tailored applications from the Suite to become available.

In a related announcement, Hyperion introduced Hyperion Essbase XTD, its open, integrating business intelligence platform.

> From Scorekeeper To Change Agent

“The business performance management solution Hyperion provided for us enables our finance organisation to make the crucial change from being scorekeepers to change agents,” said Jim Shiah, senior vice president and corporate controller at Coty, Inc. “Our objective is to transform finance from an organisation that reports to one that drives business results. We will do this by integrating finance into the business and making it a partner to the commercial side of the business.”

“Additionally, our long term strategies are to drive profitable top-line growth, improve the efficiency of resource deployment and build a streamlined results-driven organisation,” continued Shiah. “Good performance management and fact-based decision making–made available to us through the Hyperion business performance management solution–help us align our strategy and our operations.”

Business Performance Management Everywhere, Right Now

Managing corporate value by looking not only at a company’s past and present performance but by also taking an accurate read of its likely future represents a significant step forward in enterprise software. Business performance management, an evolution of business intelligence (BI) software, encompasses all that BI has to offer but also takes advantage of additional capabilities, such as real-time analysis, advanced planning and predictive modeling that are closely linked to operational data, to anticipate where a company is going.

“Analytic applications, BI and OLAP, have often been the purview of a handful of ‘power users’ in an analysis or strategic planning department. We envision the day when business performance management technology is as ubiquitous and integrated into the enterprise as email is today,” said Rodek. “These are powerful tools that are meant to be deployed widely. When they are, line managers and mid-level staff are empowered in ways that create a much more effective enterprise, making more informed decisions with improved accountability and execution.”

> From Reactive to Proactive

“We are building a world-class finance transformation practice around helping companies use Hyperion software to model, plan and, in effect, look into the future through methodologies, metrics, processes and systems that monitor and manage business performance across the enterprise,” said Samuel J. Silvers, partner and national practice leader for finance transformation at Deloitte & Touche. “The solutions we build with Hyperion make it possible for companies to get aligned around critical business objectives and to anticipate cultural, organisational and technological conditions so that collaborative practices can flourish.”

Measuring Total Business Performance

Business performance management takes a holistic approach to the way in which organisations
manage themselves and their relationships with customers, partners, suppliers and employees. It empowers every department in a company to set, measure and hit its goals and brings the results together in a way that promotes cross-functional collaboration across the entire enterprise.

“Hyperion has observed a growing requirement among our customers for software built on a unified platform,” said Rodek. “They are looking for strategic, operational and transactional integration. And for this reason they are avoiding software with long implementation cycles in favor of groups of solutions that work together to address the needs of users across the enterprise that are implemented quickly and offer strong integration with and extract greater value from operational systems.”

Delivering Against Strategy

Optimising the business management process is another essential component of business performance management. Hyperion’s solutions enable its customers to determine their strategic goals in a collaborative fashion and then evaluate plans, monitor operations and calibrate against those goals based on feedback and analysis. Its software works within a common framework to automate and support the workflow and decision-making involved in management. The framework also makes it possible for a customer to start anywhere and to scale as business performance management needs grow.

“A successful business performance management solution will deliver value to strategic, operational and transactional users by providing performance metrics regarding execution of operational targets and budgets, communicating goals and strategies and facilitating opportunities for plan correction/redirection,” said John Van Decker, senior program director with META Group, Inc. “Organisations should leverage leading performance management solutions that provide a comprehensive range of integrated functionality, including financial reporting, consolidations and business planning, as well as include capability for integration to scorecards and dashboards.”
