Sharp Electronics UK today sets new boundaries in the PDA marketplace with the launch of the Zaurus SL-5500 Linux® and JavaTM PDA. The device, aimed at enterprises and professional consumers, combines open standards with feature-rich hardware.
Harnessing the ability of an established community of Linux and Java programmers the Zaurus SL-5500 offers business users one of the most compelling platforms available in a PDA.
With the Zaurus SL-5500, enterprises will be attracted by having the option to develop applications that enjoy the security and cross-platform compatibility of Java, or the speed and power of Linux.
Offering all the top-of-the-range features expected by professional users, the unit also boasts a hideaway keyboard, expansion slots for both CompactFlashTM and SD memory cards and a stunning reflective colour TFT LCD screen (240 x 320 resolution). It has a powerful Intel® 206Mhz StrongARM® processor, 64MB (SDRAM) of memory and 16Mb of Flash ROM.
Powerful Operating System
Using Lineo®’s Linux 2.4 kernel from EmbedixTM, Insignia’s JeodeTM JVM (Java Virtual Machine), and the QtopiaTM user interface from Trolltech, the device harnesses the power of open standards enabling the rapid development of software applications and device drivers.
With Linux’s flexible and robust environment, developers can optimise the device’s features to create and run fast, powerful applications. Linux also represents a particularly attractive proposition for enterprises because of its superb networking capabilities, critical for the future of connected handheld devices.
The emerging status of Personal-Java (P-Java)TM as one of the fastest growing communities in the mobile landscape ensures there is an abundance of programming expertise available. Opting for Java means enterprise customers can use its platform-independence to easily port Java-based applications to the device using existing skills bases.
Efficient Mobile Connectivity and Data Management
For business users who need to have up-to-date information at their fingertips at all times, effective email and Internet access are vital. Using a handheld version of the Opera 5 browser, the Zaurus SL-5500 offers blistering Internet surfing capabilities. It also comes equipped with an easy-to-use email application that is POP3, SMTP and IMAP4 compliant.
With its integrated QWERTY keyboard, rapid composition of short e-mails is made easy, whilst handwriting recognition and an on-screen keyboard feature offer alternative methods of copy entry for the ultimate in versatility.
Offering superb out-of-the-box functionality, the SL-5500 contains a fully featured set of Personal Information Management (PIM) applications, including address book, to do list and calendar. Office productivity is also included with Word Processor, Presentation Viewer and Spreadsheet applications (Hancom Mobile OfficeTM from HancomLinux).
Integrated slots for Secure Digital and Compact FlashTM cards step up the expansion capabilities of the unit enabling simultaneous use of accessories such as modems, memory, LAN cards and digital cameras.
Effortless Multimedia on the Move
The Zaurus SL-5500 has a number of appealing options for leisure use. A built-in media player allows the user to download and play MP3 music tracks and MPEG-1 videos with stunning results. Digital pictures can also be captured and then sent as email attachments using the PDA and an optional camera card module.
Using its expertise as a leader in LCD technology, Sharp has developed a 3.5“ reflective TFT screen for the device that is capable of reproducing 65,536 colours. The impressive display enables “crystal clear” images with vivid colour tones which can be easily viewed in all types of lighting conditions. The fast StrongARM processor means it can handle powerful multimedia and run different types of applications simultaneously, for example play MP3 music files whilst sending an email.
Mark Klein, Product Marketing Manager for handhelds feels the new device represents a turning point in PDA expectations: “With the Zaurus SL-5500 Sharp is continuing its propensity to buck trends. By providing a PDA with an alternative operating system and cutting-edge hardware, Sharp is opening up a whole host of new possibilities for the future of handheld devices. The Zaurus is one of the most flexible mobile communications and multimedia tools on the market today and should appeal to our key target market of enterprise customers and, what we call, prosumers (professional consumers). This PDA works on a number of differing levels satisfying users’ requirements in all areas of their busy lives.”
The Zaurus SL-5500 comes with a docking station that features an integrated USB cable and serial port. Also bundled are a removable Lithium-ion battery and an AC adapter.
The PDA costs £449.99 (inc Vat) and is available from Sharp resellers from May 2002.
