BEA Portal Customers Realise Immediate Savings; Gartner Identifies BEA as a Leader in Portal Product Market

High Wycombe, UK- May 7, 2002 - BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), the world's leading application infrastructure software company, today announced that its portal software, including the award-winning BEA WebLogic Portal, boasts an installed base of nearly 600 portal customers. In addition to having one of the largest customer bases, BEA has been identified as a portal product market leader by industry organisations such as research and advisory firm Gartner and the Software & Information Industry Association.

Customers driven to simplify the deployment and management of enterprise-wide portals are turning to BEA WebLogic Portal and achieving substantial and immediate savings. Toshiba America Business Solutions realised immediate savings of 0,000 in annual maintenance costs through the use of a centralised repository for delivering personalised content built on BEA WebLogic Portal. Other customers launching cost-efficient enterprise portals with BEA WebLogic Portal include: Icebox (a subsidiary of Salton, Inc.), Jeppesen (a Boeing Company), Kohler, Medtronic, National Century Financial Enterprises, NCS Pearson, Oppenheimer, The Limited-Victoria's Secret, Vanderbilt University, and Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

As a wholly owned subsidiary of Salton, Inc., Seattle-based company Icebox, LLC designs and develops next-generation kitchen products and e-commerce solutions for Salton, a leader in the housewares marketplace. Icebox turned to BEA WebLogic to help enable the e-commerce vision of Salton.

"Icebox is powering the Salton vision by increasing its distribution and sales model by connecting and collaborating via the Internet," said Russ Whitman, president, Icebox, LLC. "BEA WebLogic Portal is helping us execute this new business strategy by simplifying integration, lowering our overall cost to develop new applications and processes, and ultimately speeding our time to market."

Since the debut of BEA WebLogic Portal 4.0, the industry and media have recognised BEA as a leading portal vendor. Gartner's May 2002 "Magic Quadrant" report on the portal product market identified BEA as a leader in the market. Both Forrester Research and AMR Research place BEA WebLogic Portal 4.0 on their short list for recommended portal software. BEA WebLogic Portal was awarded the "2001 InfoWorld Technology of the Year" honour in the portal software category, and won Java Pro magazine's "Readers' Choice Award" for best Java enterprise portal. More recently, BEA WebLogic Portal won a 2002 Codie Award for "Best Enterprise Portal Solution" from the Software & Information Industry Association.

BEA Commitment to Industry Standards Minimises the Cost of Building Portals

BEA is actively working within the Java Community Process, with the Organisation for the Advancement of Structured Information Systems (OASIS), with the Web Services Interoperability Organisation and with other industry organisations to establish software standards. BEA's delivery of industry standards with BEA WebLogic can provide businesses greater flexibility in deploying enterprise portals in existing environments while simplifying the overall integration and management. Through these standards, BEA can enable businesses to protect their IT investments and reduce the overall cost of ownership.

"Reducing costs and streamlining business processes continue to be a priority for businesses. New and emerging Web Services standards in portal-to-application integration and portal component reuse make it easier to accomplish both," said Craig Roth, vice president at META Group. "The maturation of Web Services may eventually provide businesses with greater flexibility and reduce vendor lock-in around portal frameworks. Until then, they should seek a vendor who supports the widest array of standards to receive these benefits today."
