The significance of the Progress Open Source Software Exchange (POSSE) took another step forward today with
the contribution of a web-enabled toolset from New Zealand-based software house, Applied Logic Systems. The
toolset allows developers to create full-featured applications that run completely from a web-browser. As well
as being free to the whole Progress development community through POSSE, the Progress Company also announced
that the browser-based framework will be integrated into Progress® Dynamics™ and be fully supported by the
company. By sharing their individual developments, the whole Progress development community benefits from
faster enrichment of the Progress tools.

Peter Sliwkowski, vice president of products for the Progress Company, said: “We are pleased that Progress
ISVs, such as Applied Logic Systems, understand the value of these initiatives and are willing to share the
fruits of their labour in order to give the Progress community a collaborative and competitive edge in the
e-business world.”

Dynamics is part of the Progress OpenEdge™ e-business platform designed to accelerate the development,
assembly and deployment of business applications and cut the time it takes to bring them to market.
Application objects and their properties are stored in a repository, rather than in source programs. By
storing these object attributes in a repository, OpenEdge developers have less code to write and debug, and
applications can be dynamically generated at runtime--all leading to faster and more efficient application

Progress Dynamics enables user interfaces for different clients’ needs to be dynamically generated, while
keeping the fundamental business logic the same. The initial commercial version of Progress Dynamics does this
for Windows clients; Applied Logic Systems’ contribution will provide comparable functionality for HTML
browser clients. This can be used for applications developed for the application service provider (ASP) model
or for back-office applications that were previously unavailable from a browser.

“We, like so many companies today, have been faced with the task of overcoming the e-business hurdle,” said
Tim Charman, chief executive officer of Applied Logic Systems. “We have invested a lot of time and effort in
creating world-class software that will help simplify this task. By sharing our expertise in Web-enablement
toolsets with the POSSE community, we will help others to overcome the complexities of taking their
applications to the next level, making it a perfect compliment to Progress Dynamics.”

The Progress Open Source Software Exchange (POSSE) allows the Progress Company and its development community
to work collaboratively to rapidly enhance and extend the Progress development platform for building
e-business applications. The Progress Application Development Environment is unique in that it is built with
the same Progress 4GL language used to build the more than 5000 Progress-based applications. This power
enables the 2000 Progress ISVs to further extend POSSE for competitive advantage, and is why over 1600
developers have already joined this open source initiative launched in December 2000.
