Peace of mind for Richmond Foods national offices with effortless data back-up and off-site storage with DataFort

DataFort, provider of effortless off site data backup, has completed the first phase of the installation of their service with Richmond Foods, the UK’s largest ice cream manufacturer, that recently brought Nestle’s UK ice-cream business. Data from Richmond Food’s seven branch offices around the UK will be automatically backed up by the DataFort service and sent to secure storage centres where it can be retrieved by any of Richmond’s employees at a minute’s notice.

Previously, Richmond relied on people in each branch backing up data onto tape which was then transported to a storage facility. The process was overseen by two IT administrators located at the head office, who monitored this and other IT functions as far as possible. If a branch needed to restore information the process of recalling the correct tape from storage was cumbersome, and was open to error if the incorrect tape were requested. There was also the possibility of the tape being corrupted or not recorded correctly from the start.

The DataFort solution simplified the entire process from backup to restoration. The DataFort software automatically gathers the data, compresses and encrypts it at source in each of the branch offices. The data is then transferred via an Internet connection to mirrored disk servers located in a secure data centre. The data remains here, in encrypted format until it is retrieved and unencrypted back at the client’s location. The DataFort solution negates the need for employee intervention in the backup process, eliminating opportunities for human error.

The DataFort Service can also be configured by the user to backup files as soon as they change, ensuring that client files are never more than a few minutes out of date. In addition, the same software that manages the service, communicates with the server on a regular basis allowing the DataFort service centre to identify in advance potential network problems before they become an issue and effect IT operations at the company.

“DataFort provided both convenience and the full range of functionality we needed. The simple client interface allows us to retrieve our information in a few mouse clicks,” comments Robert Hankin, IT Manager at Richmond Foods. “We have secured our data across the business without the need for cumbersome manual processes or expensive hardware in each of the branch offices. Its very simple and very cost effective.”

“We have had extensive experience in the banking and exchange industry and realised that many of those companies were benefiting from backup technologies that were not available to the broader market. As a result we have built upon these techniques and have presented them in a cost effective and reliable way for companies who want to store up to a Terabyte of information. We can ensure that the data is effortlessly stored in a secure off site environment whilst remaining under the control of the user,” said Marcie Terman from DataFort. “The experience of Richmond Foods illustrates that you can have top level, uncompromised off site data security, for a fraction of the price.”
