Only Product to Deliver Noise Reduction and Noise Compensation in a Single Offering; Superior Voice Quality Translates to Revenue Generation for Mobile Service Providers

Framingham, MA - May 20, 2002 - NMS Communications (NASDAQ: NMSS), the leading supplier of technology for tomorrow's networks, unveils Studio Sound., which virtually eliminates background noise, network distortion, and acoustic echo that hamper the quality of mobile phone calls. Studio Sound represents the most comprehensive suite of voice enhancement capabilities available to service providers today. With Studio Sound, service providers can deliver a subscriber experience that leads to better customer satisfaction, increased usage, higher retention rates, and ultimately greater revenue.

Studio Sound is the only software solution that pairs state-of-the-art Noise Reduction and Noise Compensation with other robust voice quality enhancement features to create an optimal listening environment for both parties in a conversation - which is particularly vital in noisy mobile settings. For instance, if someone makes a mobile call in the gate area of a busy airport, the intrusive loudspeaker announcements would not be heard by the person on the other end of the call and the conversation continues uninterrupted without requiring either party to raise their voice to be heard.

NMS' voice enhancement systems were recently acquired from Lucent Technologies and are built on pioneering innovations that originated at Bell Labs. These systems are deployed throughout many of the world's largest telecommunications networks, including Verizon Wireless and Long Distance, China Unicom, NTT DoCoMo, US Cellular, Nextel, AT&T Wireless, France Telecom, and Leap Wireless.

"Superior voice quality is particularly important since it can provide a vehicle for wireless operators to reduce churn, which is a huge drain on profits if left unchecked." said Philip Marshall, Program Manager, Wireless Mobile Technologies, at the Yankee Group. "By attacking impediments to voice quality, Studio Sound represents a true achievement in voice enhancement -- helping service providers increase subscriber satisfaction and retention."

"Studio Sound is the service provider's 'secret weapon' in creating a superb listening experience for mobile callers," said Clarke Ryan, senior vice president and general manager of NMS' Voice Enhancement Systems business. "As the number of mobile-to-mobile calls surges, the need for sophisticated voice enhancement capabilities becomes a fundamental business requirement to help service providers differentiate their offerings, generate additional revenue, and grow their businesses. With Studio Sound, they benefit from the industry's only product to combine noise reduction, noise compensation, and automatic gain control in a single offering -- representing an unrivaled and cost-effective way for service providers to increase the appeal of their services in a highly competitive market."

Superior Voice Quality Translates to Revenue Generation

Among wireless service providers, voice quality technology is a critical differentiator. Independent studies have shown that consumers are more likely to make calls in noisy environments if they know they will still be able to hear clearly, and they will stay on the phone longer. Furthermore, voice enhancement systems play an important role in improving audio quality for voice-over-IP systems and, importantly, in voice recognition accuracy for speech-driven services such as voice-activated dialing, m-commerce, multimedia applications, and personal information management - areas that have represented strongholds for NMS.

Field recordings at customer sites attest to the high quality performance achieved when an NMS voice enhancement system with Studio Sound is installed in a network. The improvement in call quality with Studio Sound has impressed many service providers in similar field trials conducted all over the world, prompting them to request the technology for deployment in the NMS voice enhancement system configuration of their choice. Customers include Nextel, Telecorp (now part of AT&T Wireless), France Telecom. Test results conclude that the voice quality improvements achieved through Studio Sound can add up to increased customer satisfaction and reduced churn, which ultimately leads to higher revenue for the service provider.

Studio Sound: Most Comprehensive Suite of Voice Enhancement Capabilities

Studio Sound provides the industry's most complete and effective voice enhancement capabilities to compensate for noisy environments and especially for problematic mobile call settings, such as moving automobiles, train stations, or crowded restaurants.

State-of-the-art capabilities include:

- Noise compensation - exclusive feature that works constantly to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. As the noise around mobile users changes, the speech level in the mobile earpiece adjusts automatically. For example, when a bus passes, mobile listeners can hear throughout the conversation without searching for handset volume or sticking a finger in their free ear. Volume adjustment is automatic and dynamic with an approximate one-second ramp time to avoid abrupt transitions.

- Noise reduction - reduces background noise that otherwise would be passed through the mobile phone's microphone. The amount of background noise heard by the listener on the other end is reduced by up to 10 decibels (dB), well beyond that which is inherently reduced in CDMA coding. NMS' approach avoids pitfalls that can decrease the level of speech along with the noise, alter the voice, or make the speaker's voice sound "tinny."

- Automatic gain control - provides speech level adjustments, which map both very soft and very loud signals to an optimal level selected by the user. Unlike many competitors' capabilities, NMS' automatic gain control is dual-directional and is not just a fixed level of gain or attenuation. The ability to distinguish loud signals from soft signals keeps conversational tone smooth and speech easy to hear.
While each of these features is of value independently, the combination of noise compensation and automatic gain control presents a new and unique concept: Intelligent Level Control. While competitive products remove noise by decreasing the overall signal level (also reducing speech volume), Intelligent Level Control adapts to the specific call characteristics, adjusts the speech to appropriate listening levels, and readjusts dynamically throughout the length of the call -- regardless of background noise.

About NMS' Voice Enhancement Systems

With more than 10 million channels deployed by over 100 leading service providers and mobile operators, NMS' voice enhancement systems - recently acquired from Lucent Technologies and built on pioneering innovations that originated at Bell Labs - deliver exceptional voice clarity and quality on wireless and wireline networks around the world. The NMS family of carrier-grade echo cancellation and voice enhancement systems deliver the industry-leading voice quality that helps service providers increase mobile usage, enhance customer loyalty, increase revenue, and reduce costs.

Without an assist from such equipment, echo, delays, and other conditions degrade the quality of voice calls. All wireless and long-distance wireline voice traffic, as well as most voice over IP (VoIP) traffic, passes through some type of echo cancellation or voice enhancement product for this reason. These systems also improve the performance of speech-enabled applications and services - such as voice-activated dialing, speech-enabled contact centers, and voice portal applications - that are designed to increase efficiency and user satisfaction while driving additional revenue for service providers.
